Played in four games over the 1986 season - from the game at Buffalo on 10-26 to the LA Rams of 11-16...spent the first seven games of the season on injured reserve with a groin problem (taken off 10-24), played in next four games and missed final five regular season games on IR...at Buffalo, on 10-26, made first appearance when went on field for second half kickoff (first appearance since 1984 season opener at Buffalo when suffered knee injury)...saw mostly special teams action, having one assisted tackle (had no tackles from line of scrimmage over season)...missed Rams game of 11-16 with hamstring injury that caused him to go on IR again, this time on 11-19...missed 1985 season due to knee problem...had reconstructive surgery to repair and reconstruct a ligament during four-hour operation on 8-2-85...was placed on injured reserve on 8-19 and spent the regular season resting the knee...Clayton suffered knee injury in third quarter of first regular season game (9-2-84) and sat out rest of season on IR, put on IR on 9-5...in only his second year of 1983, he led the team with an incredible 229 total tackles...he averaged 14.3 stops per game in '83...also recorded 1 1/2 sacks, six QB pressures, three pass deflections and recovered three fumbles on the year...played a major role in a Patriots' defense that gave up the third fewest points of any defense in the league in '83 (289)...had a big day in Patriots' 28-23 win at Pittsburgh (9-25-83) when he took a lateral on a Steve Nelson interception 27 yards for a score...led team in snow and sleet in 7-0 win vs. New Orleans (12-4-83) with 21 total tackles...recorded 20 total tackles and one QB pressure vs. San Francisco (10-2-83)...enjoyed a banner rookie year as he started all nine regular season games and was the team's second leading tackler with 123 tackles (seven behind team leader Steve Nelson), recorded 1 1/2 QB sacks for -16 yards, one QB pressure, three pass deflections and recovered one fumble...named the 1776 Fan Club's Rookie of the Year and was selected to Pro Football Weekly's All-Rookie Team...was in on 12 tackles or more in every game but one in '82...was the Patriots' second of two third round picks in '81 and was the 60th player selected overall...he was taken with Seattle's third round choice that was acquired in the Horace Ivory trade (9-25-81).

Was the Lone Star Conference Lineman-of-the-Year in '80 and '81...team's leading tackler for three straight seasons...racked up an amazing 523 total tackles over his career at Angelo State...had a stellar performance his senior year vs. Stephen F. Austin when he recorded 13 tackles, five assists, caused two fumble, and had two QB sacks and five tackles for losses of 37 yards...senior honors inlcuded AP 1st Team Little All-America, Football Coaches 1st Team College Division I All-America, 1st Team All-Lone Star Conference, NAIA 2nd Team All-America, '82 Olympia Gold Bowl Defensive MVP and played in '82 East-West Shrine Game.
Graduated with a B.S. in Physical Education and a minor in History.
