College

Johnson was a four-year letterman at Colorado (1991-94), where he finished second in school history (to Barry Remington's 493 stops) with 471 total tackles. Earned All-American first-team honors and was a consensus All-Big Eight Conference first-team selection as a senior. 1994 (Senior): He led the team with 147 tackles (92 solos), including four sacks for 15 yards and six tackles for losses of nine yards. His 147 tackles was a career-high and ranks sixth on Colorado's all-time list. Recorded nine tackles or more in each of his 12 games. Tied his career-high total with 20 tackles (13 solos), a sack and a pair of third-down stops vs. Nebraska (10/29/94). Closed out his collegiate career with 18 tackles (eight solos), a four-yard sack, a seven-yard interception return and a deflected pass in a 41-24 victory over Notre Dame in the Fiesta Bowl. 1993 (Junior): He led the team with 131 tackles (83 solos), including three sacks and five tackles for losses to earn AP all-conference honors. 1992 (Sophomore): Started nine of 11 games at inside linebacker as a sophomore and recorded 78 tackles (41 solos), including a sack and two tackles for losses. 1991 (Freshman): Started the final six games as a freshman and recorded 53 tackles (37 solos).
2004 season

2003 Season

2003 (8/2, 3/0): Was voted a defensive captain for the 2003 season by his teammates … Played in eight games at middle linebacker, including the final seven contests of the season … Patriots allowed just 11.9 points per game in the seven games following his return from injury against Dallas (11/16/03). Buffalo (9/7): Started at inside linebacker and recorded eight tackles (4 solo) … Was sidelined with a foot injury late in the game and missed the next eight contests. 2002 (14/11): Started 11 of 14 games at middle and inside linebacker and finished second on the team with 96 tackles (62 solos) … Achieved his highest tackle total since 1998, when he made 142 stops … Led the team in tackles four times … Averaged 9.8 tackles in the final month of the season. Kansas City (9/22): Led the team with a season-high 13 tackles (8 solos). Buffalo (11/3): Started at middle linebacker and played a key role in setting the tone for the Patriots defense in New England’s 38-7 win over the Bills … Tied for second on the team with six tackles (4 solos) … Helped hold the Bills offense, which had been ranked second in the NFL, to just one touchdown and only 65 yards rushing … Teamed with Willie McGinest to sack Buffalo’s Drew Bledsoe for a 14-yard loss on third down on the Bills first possession of the game … The sack drove the Bills out of field goal range, as their 50-yard attempt fell short … Stopped running back Travis Henry for a loss of a yard on third-and-one in the first quarter, forcing the Bills to punt. Buffalo (12/8): Led the team with nine tackles (6 solos) and recorded a sack as the Patriots beat the Bills, 27-17 … Sacked Bledsoe for a loss of six yards in the third quarter. Tennessee (12/16): Led the team in tackles for the second straight week, recording 12 stops (7 solos). N.Y. Jets (12/22): Played in his 100th career game and recorded 10 stops (6 solos) and forced a fumble … Tackled LaMont Jordan for no gain in the fourth quarter and forced him to fumble, although the Jets were able to come up with the loose football. Miami (12/29): Led the team in tackles for the third time in four weeks, recording eight stops (7 solos) in the Patriots 27-24, come-from-behind win over Miami in overtime in the season finale.
2001 Season

2001 (12/5, 3/0): Johnson played in 12 games at linebacker, including five starts … Totaled 46 tackles (33 solos), one forced fumble and recovered one fumble during the regular season as the Patriots held their opponents to only 17.0 points per game. It was the third lowest total in Patriots history and the lowest during a 16-game season. Indianapolis (9/30): Recorded two tackles and recovered an Edgerrin James fumble caused by Roman Phifer in the Patriots 44-13 victory over the Colts … Part of a Patriots defense which limited the Colts to only 82 yards rushing and forced four turnovers. San Diego (10/14): Started at linebacker and notched six tackles in the Patriots 29-26 overtime victory. Indianapolis (10/21): Amassed a season-high nine tackles, all solos in the Patriots 38-17 victory … Tackled James for a two-yard loss in the second quarter and forced him to fumble, which was recovered by Tedy Bruschi … The Patriots took advantage of the turnover six plays later with a touchdown. Denver (10/28): Recorded five tackles (3 solos) and was part of a defensive front that held the Broncos to only 86 yards rushing on 29 carries (3.0 avg.). Buffalo (11/11): Accumulated a team-high seven tackles, along with Richard Seymour, and was part of defensive front that held the Bills to only 69 yards rushing on 21 carries (3.3 avg.). … Teamed with Willie McGinest to tackle Bills running back Travis Henry for a one-yard loss on fourth-and-one. Pittsburgh (1/27): Teamed with Bobby Hamilton to tackle Jerome Bettis for a three-yard loss in the first quarter as the Patriots held the Steelers to their lowest rushing total of the 2001 season, 58 yards rushing on 22 carries (2.6 avg.) … Combined with Tedy Bruschi to sack Kordell Stewart for a three-yard loss on the next play.
2000 Season

2000 (13/11): Started at linebacker in 11 of 13 games and recorded 73 tackles (51 solos) ... Recorded double-digit tackles three times, including a season-high 11 tackles, vs. Buffalo (11/5) ... Led the team with three fumbles recovered. Minnesota (9/17): Accumulated 10 tackles as the Patriots limited the Vikings to 316 total yards, their fourth lowest total of the season. Miami (9/24): Finished second on team with seven tackles as the Patriots held the Dolphins to 242 total yards, the lowest output they yielded during the season … Combined with Chris Slade to sack Jay Fiedler for 10-yard loss … Recovered a fumble caused by Lawyer Milloy. Denver (10/1): Batted down pass on fourth-and-one, thwarting a Broncos comeback attempt in third quarter of the Patriots 28-19 win. Indianapolis (10/8): Tipped a Peyton Manning pass, which Ty Law intercepted, ending a Colts fourth quarter drive ... Added six tackles. N.Y. Jets (10/15): Credited with 10 tackles (8 solos). Buffalo (11/5): Led the team with a season-high 11 tackles (7 solos) ... Teamed with Bobby Hamilton to stop Sammy Morris for 2-yard loss, forcing Bills punt … Stopped Shawn Bryson at the goal line, to complete goal line stand forcing Bills to kick a field goal. Kansas City (12/4): Recovered a fumbled snap by Elvis Grbac, which resulted in a touchdown drive for the Patriots. Chicago (12/10): Gathered six tackles (5 solos) and recovered his third fumble of the season ... His recovered fumble led to an Adam Vinatieri 40-yard field goal.
1999 Season

1999 (5/5): Tore his left bicep muscle during the team’s first scrimmage of the season, which caused him to miss the entire preseason and the first 11 games of the regular season ... Returned to action for the last five games of the regular season and posted double-digit tackle totals in each of those five games ... It was the longest streak of double-digit tackle games by any Patriots defender all season ... Finished the year with 59 tackles, including 36 solo stops and a pair of sacks ... His 59 tackles ranked 10th on the team ... Listed among the Patriots inactives prior to the first 11 games of the season. Dallas (12/5): Made his 1999 debut against the Cowboys and helped shut down one of the league’s most powerful rushing teams, limiting them to just 63 yards on 23 carries (2.7 avg.) ... Led the team with 10 tackles (six solos) ... Emmitt Smith, who entered the game with three consecutive 100-yard rushing games, was limited to 75 yards on the day, his second worst day of the 1999 campaign ... Helped the Patriots to a 24-23 victory, the first win in the series in franchise history. Indianapolis (12/12): Named defensive co-captain for the game and duplicated his numbers from the week before with 10 tackles, including six solo stops. Philadelphia (12/19): Led the team in tackles for the third consecutive week with 13, including a season-high 10 solo stops. Buffalo (12/26): Registered a season high with 14 tackles against the Bills. Baltimore (1/2/00): Earned AFC Defensive Player of the Week honors for his performance against the Ravens ... Credited with a dozen tackles, including his first two sacks of the season ... His two sacks in the game tied a career high, which he set vs. the Jets (9/14/97) ... He was also credited with a forced fumble on a sack in the third quarter ... The ball was picked up and returned 23 yards for a touchdown by Chad Eaton ... The touchdown sealed a 20-3 victory over the Ravens, and allowed the Patriots to finish .500 for the season (8-8).
1998 Season

1998 (13/13, 0/0): Started the first 13 games at middle linebacker for the Patriots before a pectoral tear suffered on an attempted tackle of Jerome Bettis in the first quarter at Pittsburgh (12/6) ended his season. He was placed on injured reserve on Dec. 11 and had to watch from the sidelines as his teammates lost three of their final four games, including a playoff loss at Jacksonville (1/3/99). He was one of 16 Patriots starters beset by injuries during an unusual season. Despite missing the final three games of the season, Johnson still recorded a career-high 142 total tackles, but lost his two-year reign as the team's leading tackler when Lawyer Milloy edged him out with 151 tackles. Recorded double-digit tackle totals in 10 of his first 12 games. Led the team in tackles in each of the first three games of the season at Denver (11 tackles) and home against Indianapolis (15) and Tennessee (14). Recorded 11 tackles, including a pair of sacks on Saints quarterback Danny Wuerffel at New Orleans (10/4). It marked just the second time in Johnson's four-year career that he was credited with two sacks in a game. Spearheaded a defensive effort which limited Kansas City (10/11) to just 14 yards rushing, the second-best defensive effort in franchise history, and helped the Patriots paste the Chiefs 40-10. Led the team with 14 tackles at Miami (10/25), beginning a six week streak of double-digit tackle outings, the longest streak of his career. Established a new career-high by recording a 17-tackle effort at Buffalo (11/15). Led a defensive unit which limited opponents to less than 55 yards rushing in five games during the year and ranked seventh overall in the league against the run, allowing just 96.7 yards per game.
1997 Season

1997 (16/16, 2/2): Started every game at middle linebacker for the Patriots and finished the season with a career-high 127 total tackles (95 solos), including a career-high four sacks … He was selected as a Pro Bowl alternate. With 127 tackles, he led the team for the second consecutive season … Posted six tackles, including a pair of sacks, and forced a fumble vs. the Jets (9/14). Had eight first half tackles and finished the game with nine vs. Chicago (9/21). Led the team with nine tackles vs. Buffalo (10/12).  Credited with nine tackles at Minnesota (11/2).  Limited to just three tackles in a victory at Buffalo (11/9).  Responded with a season-high 13-tackle game at Tampa Bay (11/16). Posted 13 tackles again the following week vs. Miami (11/23) - totaling 26 tackles in back-to-back weeks … Eclipsed the 100-tackle plateau with an 11-tackle outing vs. Indianapolis (11/30).  Named defensive captain at Jacksonville (12/7) and responded with a team-high nine tackles and a sack.  Posted 11 tackles vs. Pittsburgh (12/13) - his fourth double digit performance in five games. During that five-game span, he totaled 57 tackles. Named defensive team captain for the season finale at Miami (12/22) and throughout the playoffs.  Earned Staples Star of the Game honors when he registered seven solo stops, including his fourth sack of the season with the division title clinching victory over the Dolphins (12/22). Led the Patriots with nine defensive stops, including his first career postseason sack, in a playoff victory over the Dolphins (12/28). Closed out the season with six tackles in the divisional playoff loss at Pittsburgh (1/3/98). Finished with a team-high 15 postseason tackles, including a sack.
1996 Season

1996 (16/16, 3/3): Johnson started every game, including each of the Patriots playoff games and led the Patriots with 115 defensive stops, including 87 solos. He knocked down four passes, including his first career interception, and was credited with a forced fumble and a fumble recovery. Selected first-team All-Pro by USA Today. Opened the season with a team-high six solo tackles at Miami (9/1) in his debut at middle linebacker. Co-led the team with seven tackles at Buffalo (9/8). Dropped Leeland McElroy for a 2-yard loss in the opening possession, setting an early tone in a 31-0 shutout victory over Arizona (9/15). Registered a career-high with 14 tackles (9 solos), including one for a loss of seven yards vs. Washington (10/13). Led the team with 10 tackles vs. Buffalo (10/27). Forced his first career fumble when he stripped Colts WR Sean Dawkins of the ball vs. Indianapolis (11/24) for one of five tackles. Reported a team-high six solo stops and intercepted his first career pass at San Diego (12/1). The interception came off a deflected pass from defensive end Ferric Collons. Dropped Adrian Murrell for a 3-yard loss vs. the Jets (12/8). Posted 11 stops (9 solos), including three for losses, at Dallas (12/15).  His nine solo stops tied a career-high. Concluded the regular season with nine solo tackles at the Giants (12/21). Helped the Patriots dominate both the Steelers and the Jaguars in the playoffs, allowing just nine points combined, en route to the Super Bowl. Totaled eight tackles vs. Pittsburgh (1/5/97), including his first career postseason sack on Kordell Stewart. Added a game-high 11 stops in the AFC Championship Game victory over Jacksonville (1/12/97), limiting Natrone Means to just 43 yards rushing in the game. 1995 Season

1995 (12/12): Started every game he played in and earned all-rookie team honors from Pro Football Weekly, College and Pro Football News weekly and the Football News. Opened the season as the Patriots starting right inside linebacker, opposite Vincent Brown, but missed four games early in the season due to a knee sprain. Finished seventh on the team with 69 tackles (41 solos), despite missing those four games. Added two special teams tackles. Credited with two passes defensed and two fumble recoveries. Opened the season with six tackles (three solos) and recorded his first career sack when he combined with Reggie White on a sack of Vinny Testaverde in a 17-14 come-from-behind victory over Cleveland (9/3). Picked up four more tackles the following week vs. Miami (9/10) before a knee sprain sidelined him for the next four games. Listed among the Patriots inactives from 9/17 through 10/15 while he rehabilitated the knee.  Returned to the starting lineup and registered four stops vs. Buffalo (10/8). Averaged nine tackles per game during the next four-game stretch, including 10 tackles vs. Carolina (10/29) and a season-high 13 stops vs. Indianapolis (11/19). He was credited with his first career pass defensed when he knocked down a Kerry Collins pass vs. Carolina. Registered four tackles and recorded his first and second NFL fumble recoveries in a 31-28 victory over the New York Jets (12/10).
Charitable

Johnson sits on the board of the Penikese Island School for Boys, where juvenile delinquent teenagers go to learn trades, as well as build positive character and values. Ted visits the island regularly and paid for 30 of the kids to come from the island on a bus to attend a game.

Ted can also be found at Children's Hospital where he often visits with children in the cancer ward.

Ted is a member of the board of directors for the Penikese Island School, located outside of Woods Hole, Mass.

Ted hopes to pursue a career in addiction recovery work following his professional football career.
