Douglas Terrell Buckley was born on June 7, 1971, in Pascagoula, Miss … He was rated as nation's top defensive back as a senior at Pascagoula (Miss.) High School … He was the only player to earn first-team all-state honors as both junior and senior … He set the school record with 30 career interceptions, returning seven of them for touchdowns … He also averaged 30 yards per punt return with seven touchdowns … Won nine letters overall, including three each in football, baseball and track … Played baseball in the Atlanta Braves organization prior to reporting to Packers' training camp in July, 1994 … He was a distant cousin of former Chicago Bears running back Walter Payton. Buckley enters the 2004 season ranking third among all active NFL players with 47 career interceptions. He trails just Rod Woodson (71) and Aeneas Williams (55).

In 12 NFL seasons, Buckley has totaled 541 tackles (487 solos), nine forced fumbles and seven fumble recoveries.

Buckley has missed just three games in his career, playing in 189 of 192 possible games since entering the NFL in 1992.

Buckley has intercepted 47 career passes for 763 yards and six touchdowns. He has also recorded 156 passes defensed.

Buckley played in 31 games for the Patriots in 2001 and 2002 and had a solid 2001 postseason, earning his first Super Bowl ring with an interception in the AFC Championship Game and a fumble recovery that led to a Patriots touchdown in Super Bowl XXXVI.

College

Buckley was a two-year starter and three-year letterman at Florida State. He left as the school's all-time leader in interceptions (21) and interception return yards (501). His career interception yardage total of 501 is a NCAA record. He tied school records for touchdowns off interception returns (four) and punt returns (three). He was named first-team All-America and won the Jim Thorpe Award, given annually to nation's top defensive back, as senior. He led the nation with 12 interceptions for 238 yards and two touchdowns. He was named second-team All-America by Associated Press, The Sporting News and The Football News as a junior. He had six interceptions with two returned for touchdowns. He played two years of varsity baseball and was a sprinter on the outdoor track team for one year. He majored in theater with a minor in political science.
2003 Season

2003 (16/5 – Miami): Played in all 16 games with five starts for the Dolphins … Recorded his highest tackle total in five seasons (1998), with 51 stops (42 solo) … His 51 tackles tied for the second-highest tackle total of his career … Intercepted two passes, including one returned for his sixth career touchdown … Forced a fumble and recovered two fumbles. N.Y. Jets (9/14): Finished tied for second on the team with six tackles. N.Y. Giants (10/5): Made four tackles, forced a fumble and had a fumble recovery. Indianapolis (11/2): Made five tackles and recorded an interception, picking off a Peyton Manning pass at the Colts’ 16-yard line with 2:50 left in the game. Tennessee (11/9): Got the start at cornerback and recorded a season-high eight tackles. Buffalo (12/21): Picked off a Drew Bledsoe pass intended for Bobby Shaw and returned it 74 yards for a touchdown with 8:00 left in the third quarter to give the Dolphins a 20-3 lead.
2002 Season

Tied for the team lead with four interceptions, including two in the season opening win over Pittsburgh on Monday Night Football (9/9/)… Led the team with 12 passes defensed … Pittsburgh (9/9): Tied a career high by recording two interceptions off of Kordell Stewart as the Patriots beat the Steelers 30-14 on Monday Night Football … Picked off a Stewart pass intended for Terance Mathis on the third play of the game to record the first interception in Gillette Stadium history … Helped to thwart the Steelers comeback attempt by snaring his second interception of the game in the third quarter to set up a Patriots field goal drive. at N.Y. Jets (9/15): Batted down three passes and was part of a secondary that did not allow a Jets receiver to make a catch until 3:31 remaining in the third quarter as the Patriots defeated the Jets, 44-7 … Secondary allowed only three catches by Jets wide receivers on the afternoon … Broke up a pass from Vinny Testaverde intended for Richie Anderson in the third quarter. Buffalo (11/11): Recorded his first sack as a Patriot and the second of his career when he brought down Rob Johnson for an 11-yard loss in the fourth quarter … Saw action at wide receiver for the second straight week. St. Louis (11/18): Intercepted a Kurt Warner pass intended for wide receiver Ricky Proehl and returned it 52 yards for a touchdown in the first quarter … Interception was his first with the Patriots and the 39th of his career and was the fifth interception return for a touchdown of his career. at New York (12/2): Intercepted his second pass of the season when he stepped in front of a Vinny Testaverde pass intended for tight end Anthony Becht at the Patriots 33-yard line with 2:02 left in the game and his team holding a one point lead … Part of secondary that held the Jets to only 20 yards passing in the second half. 2000 Season

2000 (16/16, 1/1 - Denver): Buckley started 16 games with the BroncosDenver's only postseason contest ... At the end of the season he had appeared in 142 consecutive games ... Recorded 33 tackles (32 solo), six interceptions (one TD), eight pass break ups and he returned one punt for 11 yards (vs. Cleveland) ... Buckley's TD came in the season opener at St. Louis when he picked off a Kurt Warner pass and took it 32 yards to give Denver a 36-35 lead in the fourth quarter ... Also picked off passes against Oakland (9/17), New England (10/1), two in San Diego (10/8) and one against San Francisco (12/23) ... Finished tied for 3rd in the AFC and tied for 7th in the NFL in INTs and earned AFC Defensive Player of the Week honors against the Chargers.
1999 Season

1999 (16/11, 2/2 - Miami): Started 11 games and appeared in a reserve role five times and finished tied for the team lead with 15 passes defensed ... Also finished second on the Dolphins with three interceptions and had one sack ... Added 38 tackles ... His streak of starting 57 straight games ended on Oct. 17, 1999 at New England when he played only briefly in a reserve role due to a left ankle sprain suffered a week earlier against Indianapolis.

New England (11/21): Registered four tackles, including one sack, tackling Patriot running back Lamont Warren for a seven-yard loss on an option play ... Also had three passes defensed in that Patriot contest, including one interception, picking off a Drew Bledsoe pass and returning it 18 yards.

Oakland (10/30): Recorded four tackles and one interception, picking off a Rich Gannon pass with a minus-15 yard return.

Indianapolis (10/10): Collected three tackles and one interception, picking off a Peyton Manning pass without a return on the final play of the game to preserve the Dolphins' 34-31 win.

Buffalo (10/4): Recorded one tackle and two passes defensed.

Arizona (9/19): Contributed five tackles and one pass defensed. Buckley also played in both postseason contests for the Dolphins.
1998 Season

1998 (16/16, 2/2 - Miami): Buckley started all 16 regular season games and both playoff contests at left cornerback. He was voted as a second alternate to the AFC Pro Bowl squad. He also was chosen as an All-Pro by Source Sports Magazine ... Finished seventh on the team with 54 total tackles (45 solo) and was second with 20 passes defensed ... Also recovered a fumble and forced two fumbles ... Buckley also tied for team-lead along with Sam Madison with a career-high eight interceptions ... His interception total also tied for second in the AFC and in the NFL, trailing only current teammate Ty Law, who had nine ... In addition, he ranked second in the AFC and sixth in the NFL with a 12.2-yard average on 29 punt returns ... His average was the second-best single-season figure in Dolphin history, trailing only the 12.3 mark attained by Freddie Solomon in 1975 ... He totaled 354 punt return yards, the third-most ever by a Dolphin in a season, trailing only Mark Clayton (392 in 1983) and Tom Vigorito (379 in 1981).
1997 Season

(16/16, 1/1 - Miami): Buckley started all 16 games for the second consecutive season and the fourth time in his NFL career (He has increased this total to six) ... Opened 15 contests at left cornerback and one on the right side ... Finished third on the team with a career-high 93 total tackles and led the club with four interceptions and 11 passes defensed ... Returned a fumble for a touchdown and also forced a fumble ... Averaged 14.5-yard average on four punt returns with a long of 26 on the season ... Led the team in tackles twice during the course of the year.

Chicago (10/27): Registered three tackles and a fumble recovery ... Scooped up a Ricky Proehl fumble and returned it 22 yards for a touchdown, the fourth of his career and his first via a fumble recovery.

Detroit (12/7): Earned AFC Defensive Player of the Week following his two interception, eight tackle performance against the Lions.

Playoffs: New England (12/28): Started at left cornerback in Dolphins' 17-3 First-Round Playoff loss at and came up with four tackles and a pass defensed ... Also fielded one punt that he returned 11 yards.
1996 Season

1996 (16/16 - Miami): Buckley started all 16 games at left cornerback and finished with 54 tackles (48 solo), one fumble recovery, two forced fumbles ... Led the team with six interceptions and 17 passes defensed ... Ranked tied for third in AFC and tied for fourth in NFL with six interceptions ... His six interceptions set his single-season career-high at the time, surpassing his former single-season best of five interceptions which he set in 1994 as a member of the Green Bay Packers and were the most by a Dolphin since Glenn Blackwood had six interceptions in 1985.

New England (9/1): Opened the season with two tackles, two passes defensed and an interception.

Arizona (9/8): Credited with two tackles, a forced fumble and two interceptions ... It was his second career game with two interceptions at the time, he also had two INTs as a member of the Green Bay Packers on December 20, 1992, against the L.A. Rams.

N.Y. Jets (9/15): Recorded five tackles and one interception against the Jets ... Marked his fourth straight game with an interception (the finale of 1995 season on December 24 at St. Louis, and each of the first three games of '96), leaving him one game shy of the Dolphins' all-time record of an interception in five consecutive games, held by Dick Westmoreland, who had at least one interception in games nine through 13 of the 1967 season.

Buffalo (10/13): Credited with four tackles, two passes defensed and an interception of Jim Kelly ... The interception came on a fourth-and-goal play with one minute remaining in regulation and the Dolphins ahead 14-7, and was returned 91 yards for a touchdown for his second touchdown off an interception in his career ... His other career touchdown off an interception coming on December 20, 1992, against the L.A. Rams as a member of the Green Bay Packers.
1995 Season

1995 (16/4, 1/1 - Miami): Buckley played in 16 regular season games with four starts and started one playoff contest ... He was acquired by Dolphins in a trade from the Green Bay Packers in exchange for past considerations on April 4, 1995 ... Finished with 27 tackles (26 solo), one interception and seven passes defensed and added one kickoff return for 16 yards and one special teams tackle.

St. Louis (12/24): Recorded six tackles, one interception, and two passes defensed and was honored as AFC Defensive Player of the Week for his performance in 41-22 win over the Rams ... Buckley became the first Dolphins defensive back to capture the honor since Troy Vincent in the 1992 playoffs against San Diego and first in the regular season since safety Louis Oliver earned the award for his week five performance in 1992 at Buffalo.

Playoffs: Buffalo (12/30): Registered seven tackles and one pass defensed in First-Round Playoff contest against the Bills.
1994 Season

1994 (16/16, 2/2 - Green Bay): Buckley started all 16 regular season games and both playoff contests at left cornerback for the Packers ... Finished with 59 tackles (48 solo), one fumble recovery, three forced fumbles and team-high totals of five interceptions and 17 passes defensed ... Ranked tied for fifth in NFC in interceptions and posted the most interceptions by a Packers cornerback since Dave Brown had six pickoffs in 1989.

N.Y. Jets (11/13): Registered six tackles and an interception.

Buffalo (11/20): Posted six tackles, two passes defensed and an interception.

Dallas (11/24): He had his third consecutive game with an interception and added four tackles and three passes defensed.

Playoffs: He also started both playoff games, finishing with four tackles (all solo) and three passes defensed.
1993 Season

1993 (16/16, 2/2 - Green Bay): Buckley started all 16 regular season games and both playoff contests ... Finished with 53 tackles (51 solo), two interceptions and a team-leading 18 passes defensed ... Added 11 punt returns for 76 yards for a 6.9 average per return.
1992 Season

1992 (14/12 - Green Bay): Buckley played in 14 games with 12 starts as a rookie ... Received Packers' Rookie of the Year trophy at Victor Sports Awards XXVII ... Finished with 32 tackles (30 solo), three interceptions, one fumble recovery and 16 passes defensed ... Added 21 punt returns for 211 yards for a 10.0 avg. with a long of 58t and one touchdown. Cincinnati (9/20): Started off his NFL career with a bagn, by returning a punt for a 58-yard touchdown in his NFL debut ... Became the first Packer to return a punt for a touchdown since 1988 (Ron Pitts at Phoenix on Dec. 18).
