1989- Holds almost every Patriots' passing record...became only the 26th player in NFL history to pass for over 25,000 yards...moved into 23rd place on the NFL's all-time passing yardage list (past Jim Plunkett)...has 73-55-3 record as a starter...at Indy on 10-29, completed a career high 28 passes on 46 attempts (tied a career-high)...at one point, had completed 14 consecutive passes at Indy...on 11-12 vs NO, attempted a Patriots' record 59 passes (27 completions). 1988- Started first four games and played in six...best game was season opener - vs. Jets on 9-4 - completing 16 of 31 passes for 156 yards with two TDs and one interception...had neck surgery (for herniated disc that was pinching nerve that went to throwing arm) during off season; lost power in throwing arm in warmups at Jets on 9-21 and couldn't play because of neck and back spasms, had to leave Dallas game of 11-15 due to head and neck injuries (happened on two-yard TD run; caused him to miss the next three games) and suffered fractured left hand at Buffalo on 12-20 (played with it wrapped at Miami the following week)...team was 5-2 in games he appeared in 1987...shared team MVP award (picked by 1776 QB Club) with LB Andre Tippett, 1986 - Started two games (vs. Jets on 1-12 and at Pittsburgh on 10-19, stepping in for injured Eason, who bruised ribs)...also played in two games (vs. Miami on 10-5 and at Miami on 12-22 when Eason suffered injuries)...had three TDs in each of two starts - went 23 of 42 for 401 yards vs. Jets, was first time in his career that he had thrown for more than 400 yards in a game (third time in club's history and second time in season for Patriots, with Eason having the other in 1986)...in season finale at Miami, was 15 of 24 for 226 yards with two TD passes (was 12 of 17 for 194 yards with two TDs in the second half); the TD passes were: 12-yarder to Tony Collins with 6:40 left and then 30 yarder to Stanley Morgan with 44 seconds left (NE won AFC East title with win)...also ran for a seven-yard TD on bootleg in third quarter of game (put score at 20-20)...won 1776 QB Club (Unsung Hero Award...in 1986 off-season had operation to correct tendinitis problem in throwing elbow. 1985 -Came off bench to replace injured Eason vs. Buffalo on 10-13 and spearheaded NE to 14-3 win in first appearance since coming out of the third game of 1984 season, vs. Seattle on 9-16...went 15 of 19 for 282 yards with one TD (16 yarder to Fryar) and one interception...NE had 2-3 record going into that Buffalo game, but he led team to six consecutive wins before suffering injury at NY Jets, on 11-24...placed on IR on 11-30 for fractured tibia in left knee (reparied on 11-26) and also had sprained medial collateral ligament damage...was activated on 1-3-86...in 4th quarter of regular season games played, went 24 of 29 for 465 yards, with four TDs and no intereptions; also ran for two fourth quarter TDs, both game winners...came in for Eason in Super Bowl XX and hit on 17 of 30 passes (56.7%) for 177 yards, with one TD (eight yarder to Fryar, 1:46 into 4th) and had two interceptions...was selected the team's Co-MVP by the 1776 Quarterbacks Booster Club (with Craig James) at end of season. 1984 -Started the first three games. 1983 -Off to best start of career, he was AFC's top rated passer for weeks 3-6 and rated among top three AFC passers in ten of first eleven weeks of the year...great success came to a quick halt when he suffered fractured left fibula on 11-20 in a loss to Cleveland...the injury sidelined him for final weeks of season...having set four club passing marks in 1982, he passed Babe Parilli in two other passing categories during 1983 to capture every major club career passing record...with only 3:59 to play at Pittsburgh on 9-25, threw 76-yard TD pass to Stephen Starring to earn come-from-behind 28-23 win over Steelers...that pass equaled his previous career longest completion set on a 76-yard TD pass to Stanley Morgan against Miami on 11-8-81...his valuable impact on team in 1983 earned him the 1776 Fan Club MVP Award. 1982 -After losing starting QB duties to Matt Cavanaugh early in 1982, Steve regained starting spot for final six games of the year...in first start of '82 connectred with Stanley Morgan for 62-yard TD pass on just third play of game in 29-21 win over Houston (11-28)...with him calling signals, Patriots won four of their last six game to earn a playoff spot. 1981 -In second game, he was forced out of action at Philadelphia with neck injury that knocked him out of the starting lineup for next four games...in 11th game of year, suffered left knee injury when tackled by Jets DE Mark Gastineau and was lost for rest of season...with league-leading 8.61 yards per passsing attempt mark in 1981, became only second player since the AFL-NFL merger to lead NFL in category for two consecutive years (Terry Bradshaw also accomplished that feat in 1977 and 1978). 1980 - Leading AFC in passing for first seven weeks of season, he was off to fast start that was slowly and painfully halted by two knee injuries...over first seven games, completed 98 of 156 passes (62.8%) for 1,398 yards and 11 TDs in leading Patriots to six wins in their first seven starts...sprained left knee suffered in Seattle (9-21) and sprained right knee incurred following weeks vs. Denver (9-29) began to take toll as he began to lose his feared mobility by season's midway point...in season's 12th game, finally sat down to rest ailing knees and, in doing so, had five-year, 76 consecutive regular season game starting streak snapped...in last minute 38-34 loss to Oilers (11-10), completed 25 of 39 passes for 374 yards and three TDs. 1979 -Tied with Brian Sipe of Cleveland for NFL lead in TD passes (28) while topping league in TD percentage (6.6) and rushing by QB (368 yards on 62 attempts)...his 3,286 pasing yards that year was second best seasonal performance at time in club history behind only Parilli's 3,465 yards in 1964...had four games in which he passed for over 300 yards... underwent minor knee (right) surgery in April, 1980...had incredible day in leading Patriots to a record setting 56-3 win over the Jets (9-9), completing 13 of 18 passes (72.2%) for 315 yards and 5 TDs. 1978 -His 539 rushing yards enabled the Patriots to become first team ever to have four members of same backfield break 500-yard rushing mark in same campaign. 1977 -Completed a herculean task of calling every one of the Patriots' 922 offensive plays. 1976 -Had 13 rushing TDs, beating previous high mark for NFL QBs...established himself as the game's most feared running QB. 1975 - Played in 13 games, starting in seven of last eight contests.

Started for Kansas State as a junior and senior...during career completed 166 of 371 atempts for 2,214 yards, 12 TDs and 26 interceptions...also ran for additional 585 yards and six TDs on 339 attempts during that span...part-time punter as a junior and senior, hitting seven punts for 279 yards (39.9 avg.)...caught a 22-yard TD pass as a senior.
Played in 149 games during his 16-year playing career from 1975 - 1990 ... he is the Patriots' all-time career passing leader with 3,593 attempts 1,879 completions, 26,886 yards and 182 touchdowns ... he also rushed for 2,164 yards (4.9 avg.) and 35 touchdowns during his career ... his 35 rushing touchdowns rank third in Patriots history ... he also ranks third in club history with 12 rushing touchdowns (1976) that mark remains the most by a quarterback in NFL history ... he holds the Patriots' single-game record with a 227.8 quarterback rating, which he achieved by completing 13 of 18 passes for 315 yards and five touchdowns and no interceptions (9/9/79 vs. NY Jets) ... despite playing quarterback, he was still revered as one of the hardest hitters and toughest player in Patriots history.
