This Week we Celebrate Public Service Volunteerism!

In cooperation with Hope Jackson Fire Company

How do public service volunteers make an impact?

  • As a volunteer you help others in their time of need
  • As a volunteer you have an impact on fiscal stability of the local government you are in
  • As a volunteer you get specialized training that you will be able to use throughout life and otherwise would not have received it
  • As a volunteer you will be  looked upon with admiration from family, friends, and those you help

Congratulations to this week's "Patriots Difference Maker" - Chief Donald S. Campbell

Chief Donald S. Campbell,
Volunteer, Hope Jackson Fire Company

Chief Donald S. Campbell has been a volunteer firefighter for over fifty years. He has progressed through the ranks having held all officer positions and was elected Chief of Department in 1990 and continues in that position today. He is also the President of the Scituate Fire/Rescue Engineering Board. He was elected to two one year terms as the President of the Rhode Island Association of Fire Chiefs, Inc in 1998 and 1999. He was prevented from reelection due to term limits of 2 years for that office. Chief Campbell was also a Vice-Chairman of the first Scituate Housing for the Elderly Board in town. He also was the project coordinator on a volunteer basis and built the first Hope Park a recreation area for children. In 1995 he was named the Citizen of the year for the Town of Scituate, RI. He coached softball for many years and was one of the founders of the Hope Girls Softball League.  He did all this while holding down a fulltime job and helping raise a family.

What public service volunteer opportunities can I pursue?

  • Volunteer to become a member and specialize in helping run the business side of an organization, for example, serve on the Board of Directors.
  • Volunteer to become a firefighter, become trained as one and use those skills for inspections and fire prevention.
  • Volunteer to become an EMT and become trained to perform that function..
