New York Jets quarterback Kellen Clemens addresses the New England media during his conference call on December 12, 2007.
Q: What do you see when preparing for this game with the Patriots?
KC: It’s really tough to pick one place to start. Obviously, they’re a very talented team across the board - on offense, defense, they’re doing great things. Also, it’s a road game. We were in Foxborough a couple of times last season. It’s not the easiest place to play. The fans get into it and do great job of supporting their team. But we’re down here working hard and preparing for what is a great opportunity for us.
Q: Can you talk about how much the team has talked about the possibility of inclement weather and the weather affecting what you might do in this game?
KC: We’ve had a chance here over the last couple of weeks to play around in the snow a little bit so we’re ready for it if it happens, but we’re not going to let it psyche us out should there be bad weather or anything else. We’ll do our best to play in whatever conditions the weather gives us on Sunday.
Q: How much of that has been discussed today? I’m just curious if it was at all a point of emphasis going over the game plan today?
KC: No. The weather can change in four days. We’re all aware that the weather might not be sunny and 65 degrees. But like I said, we’re going to go up and play the football that we can on Sunday regardless of what the weather sticks at us.
Q: Does the fact that you personally have played against this Patriots defense a little bit help you feel that the task isn’t quite as daunting for you?
KC: It helps a little bit. My snaps were awful sparing in the first game of this year. The game was pretty well out of hand at that point, but any snaps that I can get against any team helps -not only myself - I think it helps my confidence and I try to take each experience to learn from it and improve upon for the next time.
Q: When you look at one corner spot and you see Asante Samuel, what do you see in him as a cornerback?
KC: Well, Asante is obviously a very talented player. He has great instincts. He has great ball skills. That’s one of the reasons why he has so many interceptions over the last few years. He’s a guy that you have to be aware of and, obviously, he’s a guy that we respect.
Q: As you’ve been preparing for this game, have you noticed that teams aren’t really testing [Samuel] all that much? It seems that way to me at least from a cursory look.
KC: In watching tape, it’s not so much I don’t know if teams aren’t testing him. I watched the Philadelphia game and he was thrown on a few times. One of them was the interception he took back to the house and another he intercepted late in the game and he just ran out of the back of the end zone with it. I don’t know if they’re so much throwing away from him, but he’s just talented. A lot of times, the particular wide receiver that he may be guarding is covered and it’s a credit to his ability.
Q: How about on other side with Ellis Hobbs? What do you see with Hobbs?
KC: He’s obviously another guy with talent. When he was down here, Ellis [showed] that he’s dual threat. He’s good defensive back, but obviously he has the talent to take it deep in the return game. We have a lot of respect for New England. They’re very talented in the secondary. They’ve got a veteran linebacking corps and then also on their defensive line. Their defense as a whole is very talented and, like I said, we have a lot of respect for them.
Q: Are there actually cornerbacks that quarterbacks will avoid during a game, or a game plan that will call you to avoid guys?
KC: I think some other teams may do that. We have our own specific plan going into each individual game and we’re going to try to stick to the game plan as much as we can.
Q: What’s the mindset for your team during this game? You’re 3-10 and this team is 13-0. Tell me what the mindset for the Jets is for this game.
KC: This, for us, is the most important game of the week. We’re approaching it like that. Our approach each week to this entire season has been the same. We’re trying to keep the same consistent approach each week. Obviously, there’s perhaps a little more hype about this game because of New England’s record and their chase to try to do something that only one other team has done in NFL history, but as the New York Jets we can only control what we can control. Our approach is consistent. We’re just going to prepare the best we can and, hopefully, play a good game on Sunday.
