Report: Patriots to host free-agent safety Landry, WR Gonzalez
The New England Patriots have rifled through safeties in recent years, a position they're actively looking to upgrade this offseason.
New England has already met with Steve Gregory, who spent the past six seasons with the San Diego Chargers, and will host former Washington Redskins safety LaRon Landry this week, a source with knowledge of the player's plans told the Boston Herald on Thursday.
Landry is one of the more intriguing free-agent safeties, with a penchant for punishing hits -- when he's on the field. The 6-foot, 220-pounder has missed 15 games over the past two seasons with a variety of injuries.
In 64 starts over five seasons with the Redskins, Landry has 383 combined tackles, 5.5 sacks and four interceptions.
If healthy, and if he fits alongside Patrick Chung, it would provide consistency for a pass defense that ranked 31st in the NFL in 2011.
The Patriots also plan to meet this week with former Colts wideout Anthony Gonzalez, according to the Herald. Gonzalez spent his first five seasons with the Indianapolis Colts, compiling 99 catches for 1,307 yards and seven touchdowns.
