Mike Reiss of ESPNBoston.com notes that Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels was noncommittal on the return of guard Brian Waters after speaking with the media on Friday. When asked if the veteran would be returning to the team, McDaniels responded, "I don't have anything on that." Waters, who did not participate in the pre-draft conditioning program, is believed to be considering retirement.
Greg A. Bedard of The Boston Globe writes that of the Patriots' undrafted free agent signings, RB Brandon Bolden, DT Marcus Forston and T Markus Zusevics have the best chance of sticking with the team after Training Camp. Bolden averaged 6.0 yards per carry and added 32 receptions as a junior at Mississippi, but dealt with a fractured ankle suffered in the opener of his senior campaign last season. Forston, a 6-1, 301 pound defensive lineman, "is a player with immense talent when he wants to show it," writes Bedard. He drew comparisons to Warren Sapp while at Miami, but wasn't on the field enough and declared for the draft with one season of eligiblity remaining. Zusevics is coming off of a torn pectoral muscle that occured while bench pressing at the NFL Scouting Combine. Bedard adds that Zusevics would have been drafted if not for the injury, and that Matt Light's retirement has opened up a lof of competition at tackle.
Shalise Manza Young of The Boston Globe writes that Patriots second-year DE Markell Carter has added over 20 pounds since his Pro Day in March 2011. "He's up to 275 (pounds) now, and said he hasn't lost any of his speed and has gained explosiveness through all of his work in the weight room," writes Manza Young. Carter, a sixth-round draft pick last season out of Central Arkansas, is one of a handful of second-year players who were invited to attend Rookie Mini Camp. "I'm getting a lot of work in that I wasn't able to get last year, so this weekend my main focus has been getting better, just trying to grow in the defense and pick up on those things I missed last year," Carter said.
