Dolphins: Ryan Tannehill Conference Call Transcript
"It definitely helps build some confidence whenever you get real game reps, real live game reps and you're able to have some success and drive the team and win the game. I think, as an offense, we've had that situation throughout this year, several times in practice and to finally put it to work and make it work out in a game, it's really satisfying and it's something that we can build off of."
(On how his existing relationship with Mike Sherman has helped his transition this year)
"I definitely think it helps. It definitely made my transition easier in the fact that I didn't have to learn a full playbook. I had the foundation of it down and of course we have some new things and new tweaks and we've built on it along the way. But coming in (and) having the foundation of it already known, I didn't have to spend the same amount of time learning the plays. I could devote more time to understanding defenses and focusing on the fundamentals and the intricacies of the plays rather than just the concepts in general."
(On what he sees from Aqib Talib)
"He's a good player. He is a tall long corner and he's able to make a play on the ball if he's close. I think you saw a great interception returned for a touchdown against the Colts. It shows what he can do with the ball in his hands. (He's) definitely a guy we'll have to look out for."
(On what he sees on film as to why the Patriots have been able to force so many turnovers this year)
"They're opportunistic. They're in the right place at the right time. They're able to take the ball off people who aren't taking care of it when they're running the football, carrying it loosely. They're opportunistic in that aspect. They're going to get their hands in there and strip the ball and they fight for the ball once it's on the ground. Definitely a focus of ours this week is taking care of the ball."
(On recording his first game-winning drive before Tom Brady was able to and if there's any satisfaction in that)
"Not really. Tom is such a great player and has been such a great player for a long time. Hopefully, we can continue to build on that and I can continue to build on what happened last week. There's a lot of work that needs to be done in that aspect."
(On if he's had a welcome to the NFL moment)
"There's been a few where guys have made great plays. I think the real welcome to the NFL moment was in the first game on the first sack and (I) got hit pretty good. I came to the sideline and looked at Matt Moore and said, 'Well, that's my welcome to the NFL.'"
(On what has been the hardest adjustment for him so far)
"I would say early on it was the speed of the game, the speed of defense, how things happen. But I've gotten more comfortable with it obviously (with) the more reps I'm taking in practice and in games. It just becomes more second nature, but early on that definitely was the biggest difference."
(On what he leaned on during this learning process)
"I have great teammates and they make it easier for me. They're out there fighting every day, working to get better, working hard in the games to win games. I just go out every day (and) try to get a little bit better each day, learn from every rep I get, whether it be in practice or in games and just build on it day-by-day."
(On what it means to be included in the group of 2012 rookie quarterbacks)
"I guess it's cool. We'll always be kind of following each other's career I think as long as we play and hopefully we can all play for a long time."
(On why Johnny Manziel should win the Heisman)
"Look at the numbers. Look at the numbers. The number he puts up are outstanding. He's surpassed Cam Newton and Tim Tebow who both won the Heisman in the years that they set the SEC record for yards in a season. That alone plus the fact (of) the game-changing plays he can make, the electrifying plays when he's running around and making people miss. (He) went to Alabama in Alabama when they were ranked number one and had the upset victory there. (He) has led his team to eight victories in the SEC or on the year I should say in the SEC for the first time. I guess 10 victories now. So 10 victories in the SEC for the first year when no one really knew what to expect from (Texas) A&M. You've got to give him a lot of credit for that."
(On if he's had a chance to talk to Manziel)
"Yeah, Johnny's a good guy. We were there last year together and I think he's done a great job. We just try to keep in touch a little bit."
(On if he's kind of sick of Coach Sherman at this point)
"No, no, not at all. We know each other very well at this point. We have a good understanding of how each other works and what goes into planning a game and how a game is going to be called. We have a definite deep understanding for each other and we can be honest with each other. I think that's a big part of the relationship and how we can function as an offense."
(On if he watches much TV, in particular SportsCenter)
"No, not at all."
(On what he says to the people who say the Dolphins overreached to draft him)
"Everyone's entitled to their own opinion. If that's what they want to believe or that's what they think, then that's totally fine with me. I'm just going to go out and be the best quarterback I can be here at Miami and hopefully bring some championships here."
(On if it surprised when he was drafted so high)
"No, I always wanted obviously as a competitor, as a player, you want to increase your stock as much as possible and go as high as possible. I knew Miami was one of the teams that was interested. Did I know that Miami was going to take me? No, but I wasn't totally surprised."
(On if the players are aware that the Patriots can clinch the division this week)
"I had no clue until you just said that. I don't think it's anything that we're talking about in the locker room thus far. We're just obviously focused on a good Patriots team that is going to come in and play hard and play well. So we know that we're going to have to play well and hopefully come away with a victory."
(On the division going through the Patriots and if it's a point of emphasis to beat them to make case in the AFC East)
"Yeah, for sure. If you want to be the best team in the division, you've got to knock off the team that's on top and right now they have the best record in the division. They've been playing well. Obviously, we want to win every game. Division games are amped up just that much more and when you're playing the leader in the division, it makes it a little bit more fun."
