Getting to Know: Michael Buchanan
Michael Buchanan joined the Patriots as the team’s first of two seventh-round picks in the 2013 NFL Draft, the 226th selection overall. Buchanan started 32 of the 46 games he played over four seasons at the University of Illinois. He finished his career with 161 tackles, 14 sacks, an interception, 10 passes defensed, two forced fumbles and a fumble recovery. Buchanan earned second-team All-Big Ten honors over each of his final two years in Champagne. He not only made the New England roster out of training camp, but saw regular reserve action on defense, recording a pair of sacks and a fumble recovery in his first season with the team.
Q: How was your time staying close to home to play at Illinois?
MB: I had a great experience. I went there, a couple guys I had gone to high school were there already. I’m from the Chicago area so there were a lot of people I knew there. I enjoyed the coaches and enjoyed my teammates. It was really a good time.
Q: Are you a homebody, did that play into the decision to stay local to play?
MB: Yeah. I’m the oldest of four. So I wanted to be close to my younger brothers and sister.
Q: How is it with your siblings, now that you’re far away?
MB: I talk to them almost every day. My little sister calls me every day. I talk to them all the time.
Q: If you weren’t playing football, what would you be doing?
MB: I have interests with something in line with sports. I have some interest in sports medicine, so something like that. I was a communications major at Illinois but I came in with the thought of doing something with sports medicine. Maybe something involved with strength training. But something involved with sports.
Q: What’s your favorite movie of all time?
Q: How about your favorite TV show?
MB: Right now, it’s “Breaking Bad.” But it just ended. That’s probably my favorite series currently. But I’ll have to find something else to get hooked on.
Q: If your life were made into a movie, who would you want to play you?
MB: Will Smith.
Q: What kind of music are you into?
MB: I listen to a lot of different types of music. Rap. Hip hop obviously. R&B. I listen to a lot of different stuff on my iPod.
Q: What’s the most embarrassing song on there?
MB: I have that Mile Cyrus song. Somebody downloaded it on my phone and it’s kind of catchy.
Q: Who you could switch places with anybody for just one day, who would you swap lives with?
MB: President Obama.
Q: Who is the most famous person you’ve ever met?
MB: Probably Tom Brady.
Q: Do you have any nicknames?
MB: Everybody always calls me Buke.
Q: Has that caught on here?
MB: They’ve changed it up. Some of the coaches call me Buck, some of the guys call me Buck. But my whole life I’ve been called Buke.
Q: What teams and players did you root for as a kid in football?
MB: I liked Jason Taylor a lot growing up. I always played defensive end and outside linebacker. I really liked Jason Taylor. Probably, offensive wise, I used to love LT – LaDainian Tomlinson.
Q: Did you have a favorite team? Were you a Bears fan?
MB: No! I was always a Patriots fan! I’m a big Bulls fan, I’ll say that.
Q: What’s your favorite meal?
MB: My mother’s green pepper steak.
Q: Do you have a favorite vacation spot?
MB: I’ve never been on a vacation. That’s something I have to get to.
Q: Where do you want to go?
Q: Do you remember your first crush?
MB: Probably Mariah Carey. I used to love Mariah Carey. I still do. I think she’s a beautiful woman. I’m kind of mad Nick [Cannon] has her.
Q: Are you afraid to fly?
MB: I don’t like it much, because I’m not a fan of heights. I feel like that’s going to be my way to go. So I don’t enjoy it. I’m not scared, necessarily but whenever I’m up in the air and the plane starts moving I always have some doubts.
Q: What height do you start to get uncomfortable? A step ladder?
MB: Yeah. I just have a fear of falling off something…like balconies and stuff like that, I never want to get close to the edge.
Q: Are you a pet guy?
MB: I had one dog in my life, a Rottweiler named Diva. She was it. She ran away and ever since then I’ve never really liked animals. She scarred me for life.
Q: If you could have any talent that you don’t already have, what would it be?
MB: I’d love to be able to read minds. How about that?
Q: If you could be a singer or musician, who would you want to be?
MB: I’d say somebody like John Legend. I think he’s really talented. He plays his own music. He writes his own music. Obviously he’s a great singer.
Q: Finally if I gave you three wishes, like the genie in the bottle, how would you use them?
MB: To win a Super Bowl, to never have to work after my football career is over and for health for my family.
