Some families of Boston’s athletes hit the runway for a great cause on Monday night, including Marcus Cannon's wife Alyssa and their kids Marcus Jr. and Mady. The catwalk was part of the third annual Christopher’s Haven Fashion Show, which raises money for the Boston organization.
Christopher’s Haven provides cancer patients and their families with a place to stay and a community while they are receiving treatment. The residential apartments and community loft provide the families with a home away from home and a chance to access treatment at MassGeneral Hospital for Children.
Christopher’s Haven recently received a large donation when its spokesman Chris Evans appeared on “Ellen,” and Executive Director Joyce Duvall said this kind of exposure is crucial to expanding. The support from organizations like the Patriots, Red Sox and Bruins has been especially pivotal to the nonprofits impact.
Joyce said that a donation from Robert Kraft is helping the organization add two additional apartments. These new apartments, once approved, will help Christopher’s Haven shorten its wait list and serve even more families.
“It makes a huge difference. It means everything to us. We raise all of our funds privately so keeping the doors open is No. 1,” Joyce said. “[The organizations] really help us. That’s what it means to us. It means keeping our doors open … Robert Kraft is our hero. He has made a huge difference. We’re expanding because of him.”
The fashion show included Christopher’s Haven children and the kids of Boston athletes sporting spring looks, and Marcus said it was a fun experience for his son and daughter.
“It’s been cool. I can’t wait to see them walk down the runway, strut their stuff a little bit,” Marcus said before the event. “She’s excited about going down the runway.”
Mady hit the catwalk in a pink dress and a bow in her hair, and Marcus Jr. rocked a navy sweater and light purple undershirt. Alyssa’s grey high-low dress completed the spring fashion look for the Cannon family.
The families of Boston Red Sox players Clay Buchholz, Dustin Pedroia, Tommy Layne, Craig Kimbrel and Joe Kelly also took to the runway.
Before the show, Bruins captain Zdeno Chara awarded the 2016 Christopher’s Haven Leadership Award to Denna Laing of the NWHL Boston Pride for her strength, courage and inspiration as she recovers from an injury sustained during a hockey game in December.
The spotlight also fell on Julia Berv, a Christopher’s Haven resident who finished radiation treatment earlier in the day. She sported a blue dress and rang the traditional bell for completing treatment at the end of the runway.
Events like this give the city a chance to see the great work and services that are being provided by Christopher’s Haven, Joyce said.
“We are very different from any normal medical housing. We do very different things for the kids," Joyce said. "We change their whole experience here in Boston and we change their lives as cancer patients.”
