Bill Belichick Postgame Press Conference Transcript

Posted Aug 24, 2012

New England Patriots Head Coach Bill Belichick addresses the media at Raymond James Stadium following a preseason game versus the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Friday, August 24, 2012.

(Opening statement)
“We’ve got a lot of work to do. We’ve got a long way to go. We really didn’t perform at the level we need to at any area. You know when you can’t score offensively, give up a lot of points on defense, nobody can make any plays in the kicking game, you don’t have a real good chance to win, and that’s pretty much what it was tonight. So, we’ve got a lot of work to do. You know, we’re close to where we need to be. Hopefully we can close the gap here pretty soon.”

(On if tonight’s performance changed the plans for next Wednesday’s game)
“We’re going to do the best thing we can to help our football team get better, just like we always would. [The team will] make the same decision making process we always follow [and] do whatever we can to get better.”

(On the offense)
“We didn’t do anything offensively except lose yardage and turn the ball over. It was tough to watch anything offensively. There wasn’t anything. Throw [Tampa Bay] the ball, we can’t make any yards in the running game, third-and-long all day.”

(On RB Stevan Ridley’s performance)
“Some good plays, some not so good.”

(On QB Ryan Mallett)
“I thought he did a good job with the opportunities he had. You know, it was a good throw he made on fourth-and-one, on the comeback. He made some other good throws on the last two drives. The game was out of hand at that point, but he did what he could when he had the opportunity for it.”

(On the New England defense)
“[The defense] didn’t make any game changing plays, no turnovers, [and] didn’t put [Tampa Bay] in long yardage very often. They did what they wanted to do, scored 30 points.”
