Bill O'Brien Conference Call Transcript - 11/1/2011

Posted Nov 1, 2011

Read what Patriots offensive coordinator Bill O'Brien had to say as he addressed the media during his conference call on Tuesday, November 1, 2011.

Q: What were your thoughts on why the offense struggled to get in sync until midway through the fourth quarter?

BO: I just think it was a game where we didn't play as well, execute as well, coach as well as Pittsburgh did. Pittsburgh, give them all the credit - they played a really solid football game, played a tough game. I think we played a tough game too, but at the same time, we have to execute better and that's what it came down to and they did a better job than us.

Q: Did you expect to go to Kevin Faulk as much as you did in his first game back?

BO: The way the game played out, there were some no-huddle situations, there were some different personnel groupings that we used where he was the back in those personnel groupings. That's why he had the bulk of the reps at the running back position.

Q: We saw a little bit of Taylor Price again last week. Where do things stand with him? Is he progressing as well as you'd like in terms of being a part of the offense?

BO: He already is. He's practiced well. We need to get him in there more. He's done a good job in practice. He's a guy that we have to give him some more reps in the games.

Q: How do you foresee that coming? As part of the three receiver group or as one of the top two receivers?

BO: We're figuring all that out right now so you'll see that on Sunday.

Q: As far as your other receivers facing that kind of physical, man-to-man coverage that the Steelers showed - I think you've seen that at other times, what's the best recourse for a team that's going to be physical down the field with you?

BO: That's not the first time people have played man coverage on us. I'll say this about that, it wasn't all man coverage. You spin the dial and they did a really good job of doing that. We have to coach it better, we have to execute it better as players and we will.

Q: Looking ahead to the Giants, they bring a lot of pressure with the front four. What do you see from them up front and you do you guys match up with your offensive line?

BO: They have a very good front. They have a very good defense. They have a really good amount of experience on the defense, guys that have played a lot of football. We feel like we match up with these guys, just like we feel like we match up with every team we play. Again, it comes down to going out there and practicing well and then going out there and putting it out on the field. This will be a big challenge - every week is a big challenge and this is no different than any other week. We're looking forward to it.

Q: With the way the Giants get after the quarterback, is it more scheme and tricky things or do they just do simple things and get after you?

BO: It's a little bit of everything. Perry Fewell does a great job. He's been a coordinator in the league for a while now. He does a really good job of mixing things up, mixing up the looks, making sure that he has some different things for each game. Obviously they have a bunch of really good players up front with [Osi] Umenyiora, JPP [Jason Pierre-Paul], now with [Justin] Tuck back and those guys. I could name them all, [Chris] Canty and then obviously linebacker-wise and secondary-wise it's a very solid group. It's not just one thing or this or that, it's a lot of different things you have to be ready for. It's going to be a long week of practice and hopefully we'll be ready to go.
