Chad O'Shea Interview Transcript

Posted Aug 6, 2011

Patriots wide receivers coach Chad O'Shea addresses the media during his post-practice interview on Saturday, August 6, 2011.

Q: How has the receiver group been in camp thus far?

CO: First of all, it's been exciting getting back and getting started here. As far as the receiver group, they've been working really hard [and] we think that they've been improving every day. We like the group we have and all we ask of them is to everyday work hard, and that's what they've done.

Q: It's a crowded group. How has that been as far as juggling reps?

CO: Obviously we have a very competitive situation at the receiver position. They all have traits and they all have strengths. They all have a role on this team, so from a competitive standpoint we are very happy with the situation and like I said, they are all working hard. They're all working on having a role here and working on improving every day.

Q: Does having Chad Ochocinco's traits and strengths complement the players already in that group?

CO: Yeah, as I said, all of the players in our receivers group have certain strengths and Chad definitely has brought something to the group in terms of his strengths and his skills as a route runner. We're excited to have him. He's come in and has worked very hard. He is a very competitive person and I think he will be a very nice addition for us.

Q: How important is it for Wes Welker, Deion Branch and Brandon Tate to make sure that they have open communication with Chad Ochocinco?

CO: I think that having two veteran football players, Wes Welker and Deion Branch, has greatly helped Chad's development here early on learning the offense. It's very important that they have open communication on the field, which they have had. They've done a great job in the meeting room with Chad. They've done a great job on the practice field. We're all working together to get better and that's what they've done.

Q: People talk about Chad and about him being a route runner. What specifically does that mean?

CO: I think when we talk about being a good route runner and Chad - he does a lot of things well at the position. He's done it for a number of years, and now it's just a matter of him coming into our system, playing within our system and doing the things we ask him to do.

Q: How challenging is this offense to pick up, especially for someone who has been in another system for so long?

CO: I think all offenses are unique and regardless of what offense you're in and what offense you have to learn, if you're a newcomer, there are challenges that everybody has with learning a new offense. We believe in our offense here and our players work very hard to be on the same page and communicate and execute on game day.

Q: Bill O'Brien spoke earlier today about fundamentals being the focus early on. Is that sort of how it is for you, too?

CO: Absolutely. Our focus at the receiver position right now is fundamentals, getting open and catching the football. We've worked very hard at practice on being fundamentally sound and along with that, obviously, you have Chad [Ochocinco] who's running the offense with two veteran football players who know the offense. So, we're working very hard on the fundamentals along with learning the offense.

Q: Have you seen Taylor Price advance quite a bit from where he was at this time last year?

CO: Yeah, I think Taylor's come in and has worked very hard at practice. He has - just as all of our players have, I think - improved so far. He has a lot of work ahead of him. He has a lot of things to work on, just as all over of players do from Chad, to Wes to Deion. We all are in a process of improving and we have plenty to work on - coaches and players. He has made improvements, but we expect a lot out of him just as we expect a lot out of our group. (Inaudible)

CO: What we ask of our players is to come out every day, get better and improve. To measure that - whether it has been a great jump or not — we don't measure it that way. We just ask our players to come out and improve and that's what we do on a daily basis.
