Jerod Mayo Conference Call Transcript

Posted Nov 12, 2012

Patriots linebacker Jerod Mayo addresses the media during his conference call on Monday, November 12, 2012.

Q: Did you have a chance to watch the tape on Buffalo yet? If so, what did you see from this game that you liked and what did you see that you would like to clean up?

JM: I did have an opportunity to go through the tape and there are a lot of things that we can do a lot better. Just starting with the fundamentals: tackling, going out there executing the plays that the coaches call and going out there and getting off of the field on third down are things that we have to improve on.

Q: What are some of the positives that you saw?

JM: Throughout some of the series we had some good plays, some negative plays. We had two or three sacks in the game. Guys were out there playing physical. Those are some of the things that you can take away and build on. But at the same time it's hard to look at those things when you give up 30-something points in a game.

Q: Did you take exception to Ryan Fitzpatrick's comments about Brandon Spikes being a ‘punk?'

JM: I'm not familiar with, what was the comment? I'm not familiar with it.

Q: He was responding to questions about the hit that he took from Spikes and he said, ‘Sometimes the punk comes out in him.'

JM: To be honest with you, we've played these guys twice this year and you know we're kind of putting them in the rearview mirror now and our focus is on the Colts. Everyone has their own opinion about each and every player in the league. I'm sure Spikes doesn't really pay attention to it either. We're moving onto the Colts and that's where our focus is.

Q: Are you excited to receive a newcomer on defense with the addition of Aqib Talib in the secondary?

DM: I'm very excited. Hopefully I'll get a chance to meet him on Wednesday and hopefully he's ready to come in and work.

Q: Is it difficult to pick up this defense in mid-stream like he will have to do?

JM: I think when guys come in – we have great coaches on each side of the ball – it's difficult, but at the same time, if you put the work in and put the dedication into it, you can pick it up. I don't think that will be a problem. But that would be a question you would have to ask him when he gets here.

Q: What have been your impressions of Jermaine Cunningham as an interior pass rusher?

JM: Jermaine has been doing a good job. He's a very versatile player, he can play outside and he can play inside. He had a good sack this past week. Showing a little bit of his power and made a big play for us. So, hopefully he continues to improve and continues to help us.

Q: Obviously you study offensive players on a week-to-week basis, but have you had any reason to watch Aqib Talib? If so, do you have any opinion on what you have seen from him since you guys came into the league together?

JM: Yeah, we came in the same year. I just know that he is a competitor and he loves the game. Like you said, I'm not really sure as far as the way he plays the game, but I just know he goes out there and plays hard every day. So we'll see what happens when he gets here.

Q: Did your paths cross at all during the pre-draft process in 2008?

JM: Yeah. I'm not sure what teams we were at, but we were on a couple of visits together.

Q: Did you have any interactions with him at all that left you with any type of impression of the way he goes about his business?

JM: You know what, to be honest with you, when you're going on those pre-draft visits you say hi to guys, you meet guys; I wouldn't say you become the best of friends, but at the same time your main focus is to try to get a job, you're out there on an interview process. But when we crossed paths he seemed like a cool guy and hopefully I get a chance to meet him on Wednesday.
