News Blitz 3/10: Redskins have reportedly "expressed interest" in Aqib Talib

Posted Mar 10, 2014

The Patriots.com News Blitz gets you up-to-date on the latest Patriots news from local and national media.

Mike Jones of the Washington Post reports that the Washington Redskins have "expressed interest" in free agent CB Aqib Talib.

"He long had been regarded as one of Washington’s top free agent targets," adds Jones. "He has ties to people within Washington’s organization, having played for secondary coach Raheem Morris while in Tampa Bay, and Redskins General Manager Bruce Allen drafted Talib when he held the same position with the Buccaneers in 2008." Rand Getlin of Yahoo Sports reports via Twitter that the Patriots are re-signing free agent TE Michael Hoomanawanui. The contract is reportedly a two-year deal.

Mike Giardi of CSNNE.com reports via Twitter that there is a strong push within the Patriots headquarters to re-sign free agent WR Julian Edelman.

John McClain of the Houston Chronicle reports that the Houston Texans will not be trading for Patriots backup QB Ryan Mallett.

Ben Volin of the Boston Globe reports that the Patriots will come to a decision by Tuesday on whether or not WR Danny Amendola will keep his roster spot.

PREPPING FOR FREE AGENCY
The start of free agency begins Tuesday! Get caught up on who the Patriots free agents are and the top free agents the team could target.

"The NFL Network reported last week that the Patriots cannot use the June 1 cut on Amendola because he automatically receives his bonus on Tuesday, the first day of the league year (and the first day Amendola could be cut), but that’s not quite accurate, the way we understand it," writes Volin. "The league year begins at 4 p.m., and the Patriots will have until 11:59 p.m. Tuesday to decide whether or not to keep Amendola. If Amendola is still on the roster at midnight, then he gets his $2 million, and the Patriots lose incentive to cut him." READ MORE>>

Mike Reiss of ESPNBoston.com reports that the Patriots have had talks with representatives for DT Vince Wilfork about restructuring his contract, according to a source.

"Wilfork is due to earn $7.5 million in base salary in 2014, the final year of his deal," adds Reiss. "His salary-cap charge is a hefty $11.6 million. He turns 33 in November and is coming off a torn Achilles injury that ended his 2013 season after four games." READ MORE>>
