News Blitz 3/26: ESPN Boston reports Patriots, Wilfork "are talking"

Posted Mar 26, 2014

The Patriots.com News Blitz gets you up-to-date on the latest Patriots news from local and national media.

Mike Reiss of ESPNBoston.com reports that Vince Wilfork and the Patriots "are talking" after news surfaced two weeks ago that the veteran nose tackle requested his release from the team.

"There have been some steps forward, but more are needed to push it over the goal-line," adds Reiss. "As we learned last year with Wes Welker, just because things might be looking up doesn't mean an agreement is forthcoming. It can fizzle out quickly.

"But one thing is clear: The Patriots and Wilfork are in a better place than they were two weeks ago." READ MORE>>

Karen Guregian of the Boston Herald reports that the Patriots are considering moving second-year CB Logan Ryan to free safety, with Devin McCourty taking over the strong safety role.

"Why would this work? Ryan’s ball-hawking skills are obvious," writes Guregian. "He’s instinctive and plays well in space, much like McCourty. He could also play in the slot, but there’s a logjam with Kyle Arrington and Alfonzo Dennard competing for that role, once Browner completes his four-game NFL drug suspension." READ MORE>>

Doug Kyed of NESN.com reports that Bill Belichick and six Patriots staff members worked out draft prospect Kelvin Benjamin at the Florida State campus last Friday. The 6-foot-5 wide receiver is projected by many to be a first-round pick in this year's NFL Draft.

"Signing LaFell and showing interest in projected first-round wide receivers like Benjamin, USC’s Marqise Lee and Texas A&M’s Mike Evans could mean the Patriots don’t have a lot of faith in last year’s rookies," writes Kyed. "This year’s draft-eligible crop of wideouts is considered deep with talent." READ MORE>>

Christopher Price of WEEI.com reports that, according to a league source, the Patriots worked out Michigan WR Jeremy Gallon in Ann Arbor on Tuesday as the team continues to prepare for May's NFL Draft.

"The 5-foot-8, 187-pound Gallon has put up impressive numbers over the last two years with the Wolverines, including 89 catches for 1,373 yards and nine touchdowns in 2013," writes Price. "He also posted good numbers as a return man, compiling 589 yards on 27 kick returns in 2010, and 192 yards on 31 punt returns in 2011." READ MORE>>
