News Blitz 3/28: Patriots in the mix for free agent DeSean Jackson?

Posted Mar 28, 2014

The Patriots.com News Blitz gets you up-to-date on the latest Patriots news from local and national media.

Mike Florio of ProFootballTalk.com writes that the Patriots could be "thrown into the mix" as a potential suitor for free agent WR DeSean Jackson, who was released earlier today by the Philadelphia Eagles. Florio lists the 49ers, Seahawks and Jets as teams that "definitely were interested" in Jackson before his release.

"At this point, we know only that the Eagles aren’t interested in keeping him around — and that the Eagles weren’t able to line up a trade partner," adds Florio. "Even with several more weeks until Jackson could have shown up for the offseason program and forced the team’s hand, the Eagles decided to close the books on Jackson and move on." READ MORE>>

Christopher Jason of The Republican takes a look at how Alabama QB AJ McCarron might fit into the Patriots draft plans this May.

"McCarron is a smart football player who would fit in well in New England, and I could see him being the heir apparent to Brady," writes Jason. "Let him sit for a couple of seasons, learn the playbook and from Brady then watch him succeed in the NFL. McCarron is a winner and it is no fluke as to why he is consistently linked to the Patriots." READ MORE>>

Tom E. Curran of CSNNE.com reports that Iowa TE C.J. Fiedorowicz is scheduled to visit with the Patriots in April as the team prepares for the NFL Draft.

"Fiedorowicz ran a 4.7-second 40-yard dash at the NFL Combine," notes Curran. "The Patriots will definitely be in the market for a tight end upgrade in this draft given the passing game limitations of their non-Gronk tight ends and the brittleness of Gronk himself." READ MORE>>

Doug Kyed of NESN.com shares his most recent 2014 NFL Mock Draft and has the Patriots selecting USC WR Marqise Lee with the 29th overall pick in the first round.

"The Patriots spent a lot of time with Lee at the combine, and they have shown interest in other top wideouts such as Evans and Benjamin," writes Kyed. "Lee is a nice fit for the Patriots’ offense and could challenge Dobson and LaFell for the starting job at “X” receiver. Lee had highly productive freshman and sophomore seasons with the Trojans, but a knee injury slowed him in 2013." READ MORE>>
