News Blitz 3/4: Vikings DE Everson Griffen a top target for the Patriots in free agency?

Posted Mar 4, 2014

The Patriots.com News Blitz gets you up-to-date on the latest Patriots news from local and national media.

Mike Reiss of ESPNBoston.com shares his defensive end/OLB free agent fits for the Patriots. His projected top targets for New England include Vikings DE Jared Allen, Broncos DE Robert Ayers, and Vikings DE Everson Griffen.

"For a multiple defense that values versatility, the 6-foot-3, 273-pound Griffen could be an intriguing piece whether playing in a two- or three-point stance," writes Reiss. "First-year Patriots assistant coach Brendan Daly should have good intel on him from their time together the past two years in Minnesota (same with Jared Allen)." READ MORE>>

Erik Frenz of the Boston Globe shares his Patriots 2014 free agency wish list, which includes Giants WR Hakeem Nicks, Texans TE Garrett Graham, Dolphins DT Randy Starks, Browns S T.J. Ward, and Broncos DE Robert Ayers.

"If the Patriots want to take out an insurance policy on the development of Aaron Dobson, or simply to add another weapon to their offensive arsenal, Nicks would be a good direction to look," writes Frenz. READ MORE>>

Ron Borges of the Boston Herald doesn't believe Buccaneers CB Darrelle Revis is a realistic trade option for the Patriots. Rumors have swirled that Tampa Bay may be shopping the talented defensive back.

"Not a penny of his $16 million annual salary is guaranteed because he believes the guarantee is his ability, and he’s right," notes Borges. "Somebody will pay him and it’s not likely to be the Patriots. More to the point, Revis is smart enough to know (and if he isn’t, his confidant, Law, will inform him) if he comes here with no guaranteed money he’ll be guaranteed only one thing: He won’t see most of it."  READ MORE>>

Tom E. Curran of CSNNE.com believes the Patriots need to sign either Julian Edelman or Steelers WR Emmanuel Sanders in free agency this offseason.

"Edelman, of course, has the experience in the offense and with Tom Brady," adds Curran. "Sanders and Edelman are similar in terms of size, after-catch ability and versatility. Sanders is more durable. Edelman is already versed in the Patriots offense. It’s hard to put a price tag on that. It’s scary, though, to re-up with Edelman already knowing the injury risks dotting the receiving corps in place." READ MORE>>

Doug Kyed of NESN.com writes that Patriots WR Aaron Dobson is planning to work out with Tom Brady in Los Angeles this offseason, according to the Boston Herald's Jeff Howe.

"Dobson had the most productive season of a Patriots rookie wide receiver since Brady took over as the team’s starting quarterback in 2001," notes Kyed. "Dobson had 37 catches for 519 yards with four touchdowns in 2013. He played in 12 games, starting nine."  READ MORE>>
