News Blitz 4/10: Gil Brandt projects big year-two jump for Dobson

Posted Apr 10, 2014

The News Blitz gets you up-to-date on the latest Patriots news from local and national media.

Gil Brandt of believes Patriots WR Aaron Dobson is among the NFL's second-year players who are set for a big jump in production this season. He projects 75 catches, 1,100 yards and 7 touchdowns for the young wideout.

"The former second-round pick has the quickness to beat press coverage and an ability to make some spectacular catches, despite having relatively small hands," writes Brandt. "He can make adjustments on the ball and is a good blocker for a receiver. He's got some special stuff about him." READ MORE>>

Mike Reiss of takes a look at five of the larger-sized running back prospects in this year's NFL draft and shares his thoughts on each as a potential replacement for LeGarrette Blount. One of the players in the discussion is Boston College's Andre Williams.

"No stranger to the Patriots because he did his best work about 20 miles from Gillette Stadium, he put together an impressive 2013 season that was worthy of Heisman Trophy consideration," notes Reiss. "At 5-foot-11 3/8 and 230 pounds, he is a solid all-around prospect who projects to the middle rounds. If he's there in the late third round, it's an intriguing possibility in the range where value might match up with need." READ MORE>>

Christopher Jason of takes a look at Wisconsin WR Jared Abbrederis and wonders how the NFL draft prospect might fit into the Patriots plans in the middle rounds this May.

"Abbrederis is the type of versatile receiver that Bill Belichick loves to have on his team who can play on both the outside and in the slot. With his high football IQ, Abbrederis would likely transition to the pro level well and pick up the playbook," writes Jason. "With the slot position filled in New England, he could compete for playing time on the outside and be Tom Brady's third or fourth receiver." READ MORE>>

Tom E. Curran of believes North Carolina TE Eric Ebron would be "absolutely the perfect pick" for the Patriots in the first round of the NFL draft, but adds that the team may have to get into the top-15 to have a chance to grab him.

"The comparisons for Ebron tend toward Vernon Davis," writes Curran. "He's a little more like Aaron Hernandez without the slipperiness after the catch but with much more willingness to be physical. He's not as stiff as Davis nor as powerful." READ MORE>>

Sam Galanis of writes that the Patriots met with LSU WR Jarvis Landry on Tuesday, according to a tweet from NFL Network's Albert Breer.

"Landry is often overshadowed by fellow wide receiver teammate Odell Beckham Jr., who is expected to go in the first round of the NFL Draft," adds Galanis. "Landry lacks Beckham’s explosiveness, but he posted the best numbers for the Tigers in 2013, catching 77 passes for 1,193 yards and 10 touchdowns thanks to his large, steady hands. Landry also led the nation in third-down catches for a first down last season." READ MORE>>
