News Blitz 5/19: Patriots reportedly sign former Maine WR Derrick Johnson

Posted May 19, 2014

The Patriots.com News Blitz gets you up-to-date on the latest Patriots news from local and national media.

Field Yates of ESPN Boston reports that the Patriots have signed undrafted rookie free agent WR Derrick Johnson, according to a source. Johnson caught 60 passes for the University of Maine in 2013.

"He brings an element of speed to the field, as he reportedly was the fastest player in the Maine program with a 40 time clocked in the 4.3 range," adds Yates. READ MORE>>

Doug Kyed of NESN.com believes Vince Wilfork and Dominique Easley are the only Patriots who are locks to make the team at defensive tackle. That leaves Armond Armstead, Tommy Kelly, Sealver Siliga, Chris Jones and Joe Vellano on the roster bubble.

"Armstead still is a complete unknown in the NFL," writes Kyed. "He dominated north of the border, but that doesn't always translate to success in the US of A. Armstead could offer positional versatility and pressure from multiple techniques, or it could be another year of 'Sasquatch'-watch as Armstead slinks in and out of the locker room, recovering." Peter King of Sports Illustrated mentions the Patriots when talking about a potential trade of Houston Texans WR Andre Johnson.

"Houston coach Bill O’Brien is in a tough spot," writes King. "He’s got a wideout who’s going to be 33 this season, who, despite the inconsistency at quarterback for the team, has caught 221 passes over the last two years and missed zero games due to injury. If Johnson’s not going to be with the program, is it worth trying to get a 2015 or 2016 first-round pick for him - which some contender (New England? San Francisco?) might be willing to do?" Vinnie Iyer of Sporting News believes the Patriots are one of the five best fits for Houston's Andre Johnson.

"The Patriots would need to get very creative to make it work," adds Iyer. "It's too bad, because they represent a Super Bowl contender that could also use Johnson's help as an outside target for Tom Brady. Trading in one Red, White and Blue for another won't be happening." READ MORE>>
