News Blitz 5/23: TE Dustin Keller a candidate to be signed after June 1st?

Posted May 23, 2014

The Patriots.com News Blitz gets you up-to-date on the latest Patriots news from local and national media.

Mike Reiss of ESPN Boston believes free agent TE Dustin Keller could be a candidate to sign with the Patriots after June 1st.

"While the bulk of free agency is completed, tight end and linebacker are two spots that could potentially use a boost," writes Reiss. "The club previously hosted veterans Dustin Keller (tight end) and James Anderson (linebacker) and they could be candidates to be signed after June 1, when they wouldn't count against the compensatory draft pick formula." Doug Kyed of NESN.com grades the depth at each position on the Patriots roster. He believes the depth at linebacker is potentially the most shallow behind starters Jerod Mayo, Dont'a Hightower and Jamie Collins.

"The reserves have played just 54 career snaps on defense," adds Kyed. "Beauharnais, White and Hull only played one defensive snap each in 2013. Fleming has potential as a former fifth-round pick, but torn ACLs in consecutive seasons derailed his career. The Patriots are lucky they have quality starters - now they just need to stay healthy." Mark Sessler of NFL.com shares his projected 2014 starters for the New England Patriots.

"If he can fend off young Kenbrell Thompkins and Aaron Dobson, former Panthers wideout Brandon LaFell has a solid shot at earning the No. 3 spot behind Julian Edelman and Danny Amendola," writes Sessler. "This group lacks star power, but Tom Brady has made it work with less in years past." READ MORE>>

Will Brinson of CBS Sports believes the "worst case" scenario for the Patriots is 10 wins in 2014.

"They win a lot of games every season," adds Brinson. "In fact, they've only won less than 11 games twice since 2003 and in each instance they won 10. Tom Brady is very good. His weapons get another year working with him. Six of their games are against vastly inferior competition in the division." READ MORE>>

David Steele of Sporting News believes that Patriots C Ryan Wendell is one the top 10 veterans who will be competing for a starting job during training camp.

"New England used three of their nine picks on offensive linemen, and Stork, the fourth-round pick from Florida State, is the best of the group - and the one most likely to push for a job immediately," writes Steele. "Calling Wendell the weak link in the Patriots’ line is relative, but he does have a contract with low guaranteed money. The speculation on how vulnerable he was to the rookie began almost immediately." READ MORE>>
