News Blitz 6/23: Do Brady & Revis have something to prove?

Posted Jun 23, 2014

This edition of the Patriots.com news blitz asks whether Tom Brady and Darrelle Revis each have a chip on their shoulder as they prepare for the 2014 season. We also take a look at a report regarding Rob Gronkowski's rehab.

Did you ever want to know what Tom Brady works on with his quarterback guru? If so, you're in luck! Brady's current throwing coach, Tom House, was a guess on Sirius XM NFL Radio's "End Zone" yesterday and he shared some insight into his work with Brady. ESPN Boston's Mike Reiss highlighted House's best quotes from the interview.

"Without giving away trade secrets, one of the things we've learned about quarterbacking is that it isn't the length of the stride, it's the timing of the stride. Tom is real long and lanky," said House during the interview. "If Tom has an issue, he gets a little long."

With all the talk this offseason about Brady's alleged decline, some people believe he will play the 2014 as though he has something to prove. Boston.com's Kevin Dupont and Adam Kaufman debate whether TB12 has a chip on his shoulder this year.

But Brady is not the only Patriot who has something to prove this upcoming season. Since tearing his ACL in 2012, Darrelle Revis has lost his title as the league's best cornerback. But is it accurate to say Richard Sherman, Patrick Peterson, and Joe Hayden are better than Revis Island? Ty Law certainly doesn't think so. The Boston Globe's Shalise Manza Young spoke to Law on the matter and he said that Revis is still the top dog at his position. He believes that Revis will be playing with a chip on his shoulder in 2014.

"He's definitely out there with something to prove because of all the guys getting the big contracts, and he was down in Tampa Bay as a forgotten guy," Law said according to Young. "He's still thinking, 'Wait a minute, I'm still top dog.' And he wants to win, that's the most important thing."

According to Devin McCourty, Revis and Brandon Browner are fitting in well with the team. McCourty was a guest on NBC Sports Radio's "Brian Kenny Show" this weekend and Mike Reiss picked out some of his best quotes from the interview.

"There are different things that they [the coaching staff] like and how they want things to get done. So of course, throughout the league that are probably certain guys that won't fit in," explains McCourty. "But a guy like Revis who came in, he fit in right away. The same thing with [Brandon] Browner, whose been in our secondary now."

Last Friday, Albert Breer reported on NFL Total Access that Rob Gronkowski's rehab has been a lot smoother than last season's and the goal is to have him on the field for the season opener at Miami. He went on to say that it's even possible that Gronkowski's knee will be ready for the start of training camp, but that the team won't do anyting to jeopardize his chances of being ready for week 1.

Breer later appeared on Comcast Sports Net's "Sports Sunday" to talk about Vince Wilfork. He believes that Wilfork is as pivotal to the team's success as any player outside of Tom Brady. Having said that, Breer doesn't think Wilfork will be the same caliber player that he was before injuring achilles last season.

"I'd argue that outside of the quarterback, he might be as pivotal as they have," said Breer. "Because of the lack of depth they have at that position for the first time in a long time."

To put a final cap on the offseason program, NESN's Doug Kyed made an early projection for the Patriots 53-man roster. According to Kyed's projections, the team will carry three quarterbacks, six wide receivers, five defensive tackles, and six cornerbacks -- seven if you include Brandon Browner, who will likely not be on the 53-man roster to start the season due to his four-game suspension.
