News Blitz 6/5: Rookie TE Zach Sudfeld continues to impress

Posted Jun 5, 2013

The Patriots.com News Blitz gets you up to date with the latest news from local and national media.

Field Yates of ESPNBoston.com writes that Patriots rookie TE Zach Sudfeld continues to impress at OTAs. A giant target standing at 6-foot-7, Sudfeld compiled 45 receptions for 598 yards and 8 touchdowns last season at Nevada.

"Nice day of work for undrafted tight end Zach Sudfeld, who continues to look like a smooth pass catcher," writes Yates. "Colleague Mike Reiss recently identified Sudfeld as an undrafted rookie of note, and Tuesday was a sharp effort. Given the injuries at the tight end position, Sudfeld should have a chance to compete for reps through training camp."

Jeff Howe of the Boston Herald reports that Aaron Hernandez is beginning to get more involved at practice. The 23-year-old tight end has been participating on a limited basis during OTAs as he continues to recover from offseason shoulder surgery.

"Hernandez took a break from working off to the side later in the session when the Patriots switched to special teams drills," writes Howe. "Tom Brady brought Hernandez to the other field, and Hernandez caught passes while running through a route tree. Hernandez also worked with quarterback Mike Kafka after the session, so he is showing signs of progress."

Zuri Berry of the Boston Globe reports that the Patriots will hold joint practices with the Philadelphia Eagles prior to their preseason game on Aug. 9. The practices will be held at the Novacare Complex in Philadelphia.

"The Patriots held joint practices with the New Orleans Saints last year and are slated to hold joint practices with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers before their Aug. 16 preseason game," adds Berry.

Christopher Price of WEEI.com reports that undrafted rookie free agent T.J. Moe has cleared waivers and landed on the Patriots injured reserve list. The speedy wideout tore his Achilles last week.

"He will not count against New England’s 90-man roster. The Patriots waived/injured him on Friday following an injury he suffered last week during OTAs," writes Price.

Elliot Harrison of NFL.com ranks Bill Belichick No. 1 in his NFL Head Coach Power Rankings.

"Yes, it's Belichick at the top...and then everyone else," writes Harrison. "It's truly remarkable that he's taken the Patriots to the playoffs in 10 of his 13 seasons, despite coaching in the salary-cap era, when opponents can cannibalize his club's depth. Remarkably, New England has suffered just one non-winning season during his tenure -- his first year at the helm back in 2000."
