News Blitz 8/4: James White putting pressure on Stevan Ridley?

Posted Aug 4, 2014

The Patriots.com News Blitz gets you up-to-date on the latest Patriots news from local and national media.

Mike Reiss of ESPN Boston believes rookie RB James White could be putting the heat on veteran Stevan Ridley, even listing White ahead of Ridley on what seems to be his projected positional depth chart.

"Starting to wonder if White might cut into some of Ridley's early-down workload, as it's been notable how many repetitions he's seeing in practice, especially on the goal line," notes Reiss. READ MORE>>

Ben Volin of the Boston Globe examines how the Patriots have used cornerbacks Darrelle Revis and Brandon Browner so far in training camp.

"Revis Island has become Revis Hemisphere, with Revis lining up strictly on the left side of the field and fellow newcomer Brandon Browner playing only on the right side," writes Volin. No matter how the offense lines up or which receivers are on the field, Revis is on the left, Browner on the right." READ MORE>>

Erik Frenz of Boston.com notes that Duron Harmon is listed as the starting strong safety alongside Devin McCourty in the Patriots first unofficial depth chart, which is distributed by Patriots Public Relations and can be seen here.

"Not really a surprise here, but Duron Harmon is listed as the starting strong safety, despite several other safeties (Patrick Chung, Tavon Wilson, Nate Ebner and others) getting some opportunities to line up next to Devin McCourty," writes Frenz. READ MORE>>

Karen Guregian of the Boston Herald writes that Patriots WR Julian Edelman has been the most consistent player on offense not named Tom Brady.

"He clearly has established himself as the leader of the wide receivers," adds Guregian. "He sets the tone, and others try to follow his example. His battles with Darrelle Revis have been extremely competitive and great to watch. And, yes, he’s won his fair share against the shutdown corner, which says a lot." READ MORE>>

Doug Kyed of NESN.com lists Darrelle Revis, Ryan Mallett, Jamie Collins, James White, Julian Edelman and Sealver Siliga among his training camp standouts.

"Collins could look like the steal of an otherwise underwhelming 2013 draft after this season," writes Kyed. "His versatility has been on full display in training camp, as he’s shined in both pass-rush and coverage drills. Collins looks like he’s packed on some muscle this offseason, but he hasn’t appeared to lose any speed or agility. If Collins’ torrid play continues, there’s no way he’s going to come off the field on third down." READ MORE>>
