Patriots re-sign WR Jabar Gaffney

Posted May 7, 2012

The New England Patriots re-signed veteran wide receiver Jabar Gaffney today.

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. - The New England Patriots re-signed veteran wide receiver Jabar Gaffney today. Terms of the agreement were not disclosed. Gaffner spent three seasons with the Patriots (2006-08) and played in 43 games with 20 starts and caught 84 passes for 1,059 yards and 8 touchdowns.

Gaffney, 31, is a veteran of 10 NFL seasons with the Houston Texans (2002-05), Patriots (2006-08), Denver Broncos (2009-10) and Washington Redskins (2011). He has played in 155 career games with 103 starts and has caught 443 passes for 5,622 yards and 24 touchdowns. Gaffney was released by Washington on May 1, 2012.

The 6-foot-2-inch, 200-pound wide receiver was originally signed by the Patriots as a free agent on Oct. 9, 2006. His best season with the Patriots was in 2008 when he caught 38 passes for 468 yards and two touchdowns. In the 2006 playoffs, he started all three of New England's games and led the team with 21 receptions for 244 yards and two touchdowns. He became the first player in NFL history to record back-to-back playoff games with eight or more catches for 100 or more yards in the same postseason, catching eight passes for 104 yards in a first-round playoff game vs. the New York Jets (1/7/07) and following that with a 10-catch performance for 103 yards the following week at San Diego (1/14/07).

Gaffney originally entered the NFL as a second round draft choice by Houston (33rd overall) out of Florida in 2002. After four seasons in Houston, he signed with Philadelphia as an unrestricted free agent on March 16, 2006. He was released by Philadelphia in the final preseason roster cut-down on Sept. 2, 2006 before joining the Patriots that October.

Gaffney signed with Denver as an unrestricted free agent in 2009 and was traded by the Broncos to Washington for DE Jeremy Jarmon at the end of training camp in 2011. Last season with the Redskins, he started in 15 of 16 games and had career-bests with 68 receptions for 947 yards. He also added five touchdown receptions.
