Patriots.com News Blitz - 2/15/2013

Posted Feb 15, 2013

The Patriots.com News Blitz gets you up to date with the latest news from local and national media.

Mike Reiss of ESPNBoston.com lists the under-the-radar Patriots free agents. Players on the list include DE Trevor Scott, G Donald Thomas, S Patrick Chung, and RB Danny Woodhead. On Donald Thomas, Reiss writes, "Thomas has shown he’s capable of being a starter, but that opportunity might not be available in New England. So it opens up a scenario where another team could target him for a top spot on the depth chart while upping the bidding to an area the Patriots wouldn't feel comfortable going given his role."

Christopher Price of WEEI.com gives his free agent snapshot of cornerback Brent Grimes. The injury-prone Atlanta Falcon will turn 30-years-old this summer, but has had great success at corner in years past. "Because of the injury, you have the potential of finding a very good corner from the bargain bin," writes Price. "He has some positional versatility, having played both the left and right corner spots. If Talib departs as a free agent, the Patriots could have their next veteran corner."

Jeff Howe of The Boston Herald writes that two of the greatest wide receivers in NFL history - Michael Irvin and Randy Moss - believe it would be a mistake if Wes Welker and the Patriots parted ways. "Absolutely, absolutely crazy. But I also think Wes would be crazy leaving the Patriots,” said Irvin. Randy Moss also spoke highly about his former teammate, but reiterated that people need to understand the business side of the NFL. "This league is a business," Moss said. "You can’t really hang your hat on one particular player. Joe Montana got traded. I got traded. Peyton Manning. Golly. You don’t know what can happen. I’ll tell you what, the helium would leave the balloon if Tom Brady was traded. You see what I’m saying? It’s a business."

Zuri Berry of The Boston Globe shares a slideshow of his top Patriots free agent targets. The list includes high-profile players such as safety Deshon Goldson, DE Osi Umenyiora, and WR Mike Wallace. "If the Patriots ever want a field-stretching wide receiver, one who specifically can extend plays vertically as has been demanded, then Wallace is the man," notes Berry. "He ran a 4.33 40-yard dash and his 17.2 yards per catch career average is exactly what Patriots fans want."

Jason La Canfora of CBSSports.com believes that the Patriots 'might' use the franchise tag on impending free agent tackle Sebastian Vollmer. " I don't see it happening, but maybe tagging Sebastien Vollmer ends up making some sense for Bill Belichick," writes La Canfora. "He has some freakish talent and is the only hanging chad, if you will, on this offensive line. The Patriots could make it happen under their cap if need be, knowing they have all summer to get a long-term deal done and eventually open up more cap space."
