Patriots.com News Blitz - 3/29/2013

Posted Mar 29, 2013

The Patriots.com News Blitz gets you up to date with the latest news from local and national media.

Jeff Howe of The Boston Herald writes that Sebastian Vollmer is feeling strong after an offseason knee scope. "You kind of deal with injuries the way they come and you do what’s necessary for you to play with treatment and rehab and whatever else goes with it," Vollmer said. "Again, I feel really good now and I’m really looking forward to this upcoming season." Vollmer's new four-year contract is worth up to $27 million - including a $7 million signing bonus - according to Howe.

Mike Rodak of ESPNBoston.com reports that the Patriots waived wide receiver Shun White from the reserve/military list on Wednesday. "White had been in active duty for the Navy for the past several years and does not intend on continuing his playing career following his release Wednesday, per a league source," adds Rodak.

Nick Underhill of MassLive.com reports that the Patriots will host South Carolina running back Marcus Lattimore for a pre-draft workout. Lattimore's college career was derailed after two major knee injuries, but the former standout was reportedly very impressive during his pro day workout - even receiving an applause from the scouts in attendance. "While not yet 100 percent, Lattimore is hoping to be ready during the first half of the season, if not by the season opener," writes Underhill. "He’s been working with noted surgeon James Andrews in Florida, who recently called Lattimore “superhuman” when discussing his recovery." Underhill adds that Lattimore also met with the Patriots at this year's NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis.

Christopher Price of WEEI.com writes that Rob Gronkowski would be accepting of a gay teammate. Gronkowski was asked by ESPN NewYork about the possibility of an NFL player coming out and how that player would be received by teammates and fans. "I got this question before, about a year ago, and I basically said the same answer that I did a year ago," said Gronkowski. "You have to accept the player. Everyone has their own ways to live their life and as long as he’s respecting me, keeping distance, respecting myself then I will respect him back. If he’s being a great teammate and he’s a guy on the field doing a great job then you have nothing to complain about. He’s another teammate and another friend."

Nate Davis of USA Today Sports looks at the Top 25 available free agents. Coming in at No. 3 on the list is defensive end John Abraham, who Davis has fitting best with the Patriots. "He's scheme-flexible and still productive — 32.5 sacks since 2010 — even as his 35th birthday approaches. A perfect nickel defense rusher."
