Tom Brady Postgame Press Conference Transcript

Posted Oct 7, 2012

New England Patriots QB Tom Brady addresses the media at Gillette Stadium following a regular season game versus the Denver Broncos on Sunday, October 7, 2012.

Q: You’re 9-4 against Peyton Manning. As good as Manning is, does it surprise you it’s that lopsided?

TB: Well, I mean it’s Patriots-Broncos. It was a great team win, we got some turnovers from our defense and I thought offensively capitalized at times. There were a few lulls in there, which I wish we had executed a little bit better, but for the most part it’s a good day. It’s a good win against a very good team. Broncos have a hell of a team in all three phases and I thought we really stood up to them, so it’s a good win for us.

Q: How big was Danny Woodhead for you?

TB: Two huge plays. I thought there were a lot of guys and Danny especially, but some guys made huge plays on third down. Deion [Branch] made one, Woody made some, Wes [Welker] made some, Brandon [Lloyd] made some, so everybody really contributed. It’s fun when everybody’s involved and everybody is making plays and everyone was really on fire. Brandon [Bolden] made some great runs, Stevan [Ridley] made some great runs, Woody made some plays, Shane [Vereen] got a big pass interference call, so it was a fun day for everybody.

Q: Can you count the times on one hand that you’ve run the ball on third-and-17?

TB: No, the call came in and he [Josh McDaniels] said, ‘I think we can get this.’ They were in a pretty light personnel grouping and handed it off to Woody [Danny Woodhead] and he found the crease and once he gets going, he’s got some blockers ahead of him, he’s tough to bring down. You get an extra 18 on third-and-17 – that was huge. It ended up being a touchdown drive, too, and really propelled us there in the third quarter.

Q: This is back-to-back weeks with 200-plus rushing yards. Can you think of another time in your starting quarterback tenure when you’ve run the ball this well?

TB: No, we’re getting a lot of nickel defense. When they put little guys out there, we have to take advantage of it. I think we’re playing definitely a more physical style and controlling the tempo of the game by running the football. We have to keep doing it. It’s only been five games; we still have a lot of football games left. We have to be at our best.

Q: You guys always put an emphasis on playing good complementary football. It seems like that’s really been the case with the defense picking up the offense and special teams creating good field position. Is that a fair assessment?

TB: Yeah, [we] made some huge plays there down the stretch defensively. That fumble was a game saver. They’ve been getting turnovers all season and we have to do a better job protecting the football, but for the most part, it was very good complementary football for us today.

Q: You talked about all the little guys out there. Is that the idea with upping the tempo, to keep those guys out there?

TB: It’s just been what we’ve chosen to do the last few weeks. I think that’s more of what we’re doing as opposed to what they’re doing defensively. We’re just trying to put a lot of pressure on those guys to get their calls in and line up and play against us. We’re running the ball against some very advantageous looks and we’re throwing the ball against some advantageous looks and I think the important part is to be able to do both. You can’t just throw it all day. You can’t run it all day. You have to be able to do both. It’s been pretty good the last few weeks.

Q: Was the tempo faster today than normal?

TB: We can go pretty fast at home if we can communicate really well.

Q: Do you feel you have less pressure this year when you have the running backs running for so many yards?

TB: Well, I think there’s no question that really helps the way we’re playing offensively when we’re able to run the football like we’re doing. You just can’t drop back and throw it 60 times every game. You have to be balanced and I think we’re doing a very good job of when we’re calling the runs, we’re executing them. We’re gaining some significant yards per attempt. I hope we keep it up.
