Reports: Patriots talking Demps trade

Posted Apr 27, 2013

As the 2013 NFL Draft was winding down, the Patriots reportedly fielding trade offers for Will Demps.

According to multiple reports during the latter stages of the 2013 NFL Draft, the Patriots are listening to trade offers for second-year kick returner/running back Jeff Demps.

NFL Network, the Boston Herald and CSNNE.com all reported that New England was fielding offers for the former Florida star who won a silver medal last summer as part of the U.S. 4 x 100 team at the Olympics in London.

Demps has returned to competitive track this spring. He spent his rookie season on injured reserve in New England after he joined the team late in training camp. He reportedly informed the Patriots this spring that not only was he returning to track, but that he hoped to pursue a dual-sport career. His agent was quoted this month saying that if the Patriots wouldn’t allow Demps to compete in both football and track, that other teams would.

Demps signed a three-year contract with the Patriots as a hotly-pursued undrafted free agent last fall, receiving an $11,000 signing bonus and a partially guaranteed rookie salary.

If Demps is indeed not dedicated fully to football, then getting a draft pick for the former undrafted free agent would be a solid deal. New England also took care of its need at kick returner by signing veteran free agent Leon Washington this spring after the former Seattle playmaker averaged more than 29 yards a return last fall.
