FOXBOROUGH, Mass. - The New England Patriots re-signed unrestricted free agent linebacker and special teams captain Larry Izzo today. Terms of the agreement were not disclosed. Izzo was named to the Pro Bowl as the AFC’s special teams player following the 2000, 2002 and 2004 seasons.

Izzo, 32, is a veteran of 11 NFL seasons and has spent the last six seasons with the Patriots (2001-06) after beginning his career with the Miami Dolphins (1996-2000). The 5-foot-10-inch, 228-pounder has served as the Patriots’ special teams captain in each of his six seasons in New England.

The Fort Belvoir, Va. native has played in 156 career regular-season games and has recorded 229 career special teams tackles in addition to 18 stops (17 solo) in defensive play. Izzo has also recorded an interception, three passes defensed, one forced fumble and two fumble recoveries in his career. He has appeared in 18 playoff contests, including each of the Patriots’ three Super Bowl victories, and has recorded 21 postseason special teams tackles.

Izzo has led his team or tied for the team lead in special teams tackles in seven of his last eight seasons, dating back to 1999, when he played for Miami. He has led the Patriots in special teams tackles in five of his six seasons in New England. Since 1999, Izzo has missed just one game due to injury, participating in 145 of 146 regular-season and playoff games over that span.

Izzo was originally signed by the Dolphins prior to the 1996 season as an undrafted free agent out of Rice University. As a rookie in 1996, he played in every game for Miami and finished second on the team with 10 special teams tackles. After missing the 1997 season due to injury, he returned in 1998 to post 21 special teams tackles for the Dolphins. In 1999, he was named Miami’s special teams captain and led the team with a career-high 33 special teams tackles. In his final season in Miami (2000), he once again led the Dolphins with 31 special teams stops.

Izzo was signed by the Patriots as an unrestricted free agent on March 6, 2001. He was voted a special teams captain in his first season in New England and tied for the NFL lead with a team-high 22 special teams tackles that year. He also led the Patriots in special teams tackles in each season from 2002-04, averaging more than 26 per season. He finished second on the club with 18 special teams tackles in 2005, and last season tied for the team lead with 15 special teams stops.
