Q: This game is quarterback versus quarterback and everybody hypes it as Brady versus Manning. TB: Well, it's not that. It's two football teams who play a lot and we seem to play every year. For a while, we were part of the same division and through the years we've had plenty of our most critical games against them. It's a great rivalry and I think it's for a lot of reasons. It's usually the same cast of characters over there that we're facing and they're having a great year, being 8-0 and they're way on top of their division. [They are] undefeated, you rattle off all of the stats - Coach [Bill] Belichick did that to us this morning. It's a fun game for the players, there's no mistaking that. Q: There's been quite a bit of turnover in the locker room from those 2003, 2004 teams that played against the Colts in the playoffs. Are there ways that guys like you and others who were around in those days can articulate what is was like to some of the younger players on the team? Or does that even happen? TB: The guys that have been around know it matters. I think those younger guys get up to speed. Like I said, we played them last year, and the year before that, and the year before that and the year before that. So they get up to speed pretty quickly and Coach Belichick always does a pretty good job of showing old clips from some of those old games when we played well or didn't play so well. Their style is pretty much their style and that hasn't changed for a long time. They're productive in all areas with [Dwight] Freeney and [Robert] Mathis on defense and Bob Sanders, of course, but now he's out. And then Peyton [Manning], and Reggie [Wayne], and [Joseph] Addai and [Dallas] Clark, they've got everybody. Q: Do you compare this Patriots-Colts rivalry to a Michigan-Ohio State? Q: On the one situation that you had at the end of the first half, what would have to happen differently for you not to take a chance like that? Would you have to have kind of a lead, or would you do that regardless? [On the play with one second left] TB: Yeah, I probably cut it too close. That was probably not the smartest play in the world. We got fortunate that there was one second. [We] tried to probably get a little too much with not enough time. We got lucky. Q: Can you assess what happened today? How did you play? TB: I thought we obviously played good enough to win and made some plays when we needed to. You know, I was hoping our execution would be a little bit better, but it's a good win against a good team and a team that always plays us pretty tough. It's a good win in the division and now we have to move on. Q: Can you describe what happened on the touchdown to Randy Moss? It looked like there was a little bit of an adjustment there. TB: Well, he's so fast. I got it to him with a little bit of space and they were in man coverage and we ran some crossing routes and he caught it and took it a distance. It's always nice for a quarterback when you see the back of 81 sprinting down the field once he gets by them. There're not too many guys that can catch him. It was a great play, and we needed it. They really controlled the clock on us in the second half and like I said, I wish we could have done a little bit more out there when we had the ball, but it was good enough to win, I guess. Q: Did the safety follow Wes Welker on that crossing route? Is that what happened? TB: Well, he was in the middle of the field and Randy was a little shallow and yeah, I think Randy and Wes crossed and I think the safety kind of favored Wes a little bit, and Randy caught it coming the other way. We're just working on a lot of things this week in all phases of the game - offense, defense, special teams. Obviously, we've gotten started on Miami, but also a combination of things we need to work on generically, regardless of who we're playing and that's just kind of across the board. We need to work on everything, stay sharp and improve in every area. That's what we're doing and also, like I said, trying to get a little bit of a head start on the Dolphins. We had a good day out there yesterday, got some weather and got the opportunity to work in it. It's always a good experience for us. I'm sure at some point we'll see a day that's not perfect out there and the fact that we practiced in it and had a chance to work in it a little bit - I think that's always a good thing. It kind of sharpens practice up a little bit. Q: You mentioned self scouting this week. Can you explain what that is and the process behind that? BB: I would say two things, one is your own tendencies - what you're doing in certain situations by plays, blitzes, returns, by down and distance, by field position, by hash-mark, by personnel that's in the game, by the alignment, formation you lineup in - all those things. You sort of looking at what other people are seeing from you and what tendencies you have. I think every good team has tendencies. I think you can look out there at any team in football, in basketball [and] hockey, there are certain things that they do and if they're a good team they probably do them well. You look at it and say, ‘There they go again, that same thing's happening again.' I don't think those tendencies are necessarily a bad thing, but I think there is a point where you want to have balance and do things to compliment it. So really just coming in and understanding the system. We got a very complicated system. So for a guy to jump in there, it's tough on them. But he'll learn as he goes, and he's a good player, did a lot of good things in practice this week, and we just have to keep bringing him along and have him be a force to be reckoned with out there. On how he got his interceptions That's where the film studies come in at. They actually ran that play against Carolina last week. And the coaches just happened to put us in a great position. I think this is a game that we've all been looking forward to since we heard that we were flying across the Atlantic to play. It's not too often that we fly east to play a game. And to play in Wembley Stadium, as historic a stadium as in the entire world, I think our team is all very excited for that. Q: Will you be conscious that this is a different audience on an international stage? TB: Sure, for us, the job's the same. When the ball is kicked off, the rules are the same for us, the field's the same size, we're playing an opponent that we studied all week. Obviously, the venue is different and we're in a different part of the world, but I know the excitement that the English fans have for sports, especially their favorite sport, which is their ‘football.' Hopefully, we can bring some excitement and continue to have some fans from across the world enjoy the game that we love here in America. Q: How do you prepare to go across the Atlantic with the time change? TB: Yeah, we are leaving a few days early. We are leaving Thursday after our practice. I think we get in pretty early Friday morning. We will have a couple days to get acclimated to the time change. The weather is pretty similar in London as it is here in Boston, so we're pretty familiar with that. It's just going to be trying to get our rest before the game on both Friday night and all day Saturday, and really come out and play with a lot of excitement and energy because it's a special game for us. This is a game that we'll be remembering for the next 40, 50 years of our life, so we all want to go out and play as well as we can. Guys like Pierre Woods, Tully Banta Cain, Derrick Burgess, Rob Ninkovich who filled the role where we would normally see Adalius Thomas? DP: Kind of like everything, we had some good plays. I thought they pressured the quarterback at times decently. We didn't get sacks, but at least we had some pressure on him. He was getting hit and there were some plays out there on the edge that they did a nice job setting the edge. And, there were also some plays in there that got inside us a little bit and then back outside and went for some big plays because of missed tackles. But we certainly have to do better than that and do better than we did. Overall I thought everyone played hard and understood the game plan and played fairly well. Q: Have you been happy with the run defense, especially the safeties and how the run defense is coming together? DP: Like I said, I think it's a little sporadic at times. We have to do a little better job all the way across the front but also on the back end, specifically. We had some plays yesterday where we gave up a 40-something yard run, a 30-something yard run and a 20-something yard run. Anytime you give up a run like that, it not only got through the front seven, but it got through the secondary. Their job is to keep it from being a big play. So I think I saw this morning, I think I added up that they had 86 yards after we had a chance to get them on the ground in the running game. We can't live with that. Obviously there was a problem with the secondary. Secondly, there's a problem when you miss a tackle in the secondary and it goes for a long run. Now, granted I think they have some very, very good runners, but it doesn't matter who's running the ball. That's what I mean by sporadic. Some teams have called us, so I would say for this time of the year the conversations have been somewhat normal. As we had mentioned last week, the talks are usually a little bit more intense during the training camp period when you get to the roster cut downs. I would say at this time of the year, really over the past week or so, they've been somewhat normal for this time of year. Q: Obviously you're always looking to improve your team in any way possible. Would you anticipate striking a deal, or would you say it's probably unlikely? NC: I think it depends. I think you have to find if there's a player on another club, you have to see if you can agree to some terms. There're a variety of moving parts and I think it depends on the situation and I think you sort of take it as it comes and if there's something that we feel makes sense, then we'll look to consider it - whether it's a trade deadline or whether it's signing players off the street who haven't been with a club. So there're a variety of different avenues that you can use to improve or look to upgrade your team at different points during the year. Q: When something happens like Adalius Thomas being a healthy scratch yesterday, are you guys involved at all in a personnel standpoint as far as explaining it to him or working with the player and making him understand his place, or anything else other than what the coaches do? NC: In the end, Bill [Belichick] handles those decisions when it comes to who's available and who's active for the game. There are ongoing discussions week to week, and in the end you just decide. TB: You know, some days out there when it's snowy like that, it's actually an advantage for the offense. Today was one of those days because we had good footing and it's just fun to be a part of it. I was saying, when you see the weather forecast on Thursday, you're kind of [angry] and then once the day of the game comes around, everyone is excited because you're out there and you're like, ‘This is football. This is how it should be.' Q: At the beginning of the week you mentioned those long plays that you haven't been able to get. And then tonight - was the wind not that big of a deal? How did you pull it off in this weather? TB: It's important for the offense to hit those when they're there, and had we hit a few more of those in the last - last week, obviously, it would be a different story. We've got to make those plays when they're there, and they gave us a couple of opportunities today. Coach Belichick was on us pretty tough, being the only team to not hit a 40-yard pass play or have a 20-yard run all season, so hopefully we kept him quiet for a week or two. Q: You guys have had a lot of great games here in the snow. You've got to say it's a home field advantage. Any particular reason? TB: We practice in it every day. I mean, we haven't obviously practiced in the snow - this was pretty unexpected by all of us - but we don't go in the [Dana Farber Field House] too often, whether it's windy or it's cold or it's rainy or obviously snowy like this. There are certain ways you have to play the game and I think Arizona was the same way last year for us and we played very well. We're kind of a team in the Northeast - football conditions, you've got to go out and play in them and I think it's just a big benefit to practice...
