FOXBOROUGH, Mass. - Defensive lineman Ty Warren was recognized as the 2007 New England Patriots Ron Burton Community Service Award winner this evening at the team’s annual Kickoff Gala. Patriots Chairman and CEO Robert Kraft presented Warren with the award, which is named in honor of Ron Burton, the first player drafted by the team and known for his widespread charitable work throughout Eastern and Central Massachusetts.
"My family is proud to celebrate the fifth anniversary of the Ron Burton Community Service Award by presenting it to Ty Warren," said Kraft. "A strong commitment to philanthropy guides my family every day, and it is important to us that Patriots players make a positive impact in the community. On a team where so many follow Ron Burton’s tradition of service, Ty should be congratulated for going above and beyond."
Warren, 26, has made an impact in both the New England and Texas communities since he was drafted by the Patriots in 2003. He consistently ranked among the Patriots players who attend the most team-sponsored charitable events each season, and has also established and implemented his own charitable programs. In 2006, Warren created the 1st and Goal Foundation, which received its tax-exempt status as a registered 501(c)3 charitable organization prior to last season. Through the 1st and Goal Foundation, Warren has launched programs designed to aid the youth of New England and Texas. His foundation has focused on assisting Boys and Girls Clubs, an organization that both Ty and his wife Kesha benefited from as children. Last year, Warren gave 25 children from the Yawkey Boys and Girls Club of Roxbury the chance to go on a $300 holiday shopping spree with Patriots players to buy gifts for themselves and their loved ones. He also teamed up with Reebok to design and produce basketball jerseys for members of the Brazos Valley Boys and Girls Club in his hometown of Bryan, Texas. Warren, who joined the club when he was eight years old, has also provided much-needed games tables to the organization. In 2008, the 1st and Goal Foundation will hold its first Life, Skills and Drills clinic in an effort to foster the development of football and life skills in the Brazos Valley by enhancing life skills, mastering techniques and providing awareness and insight into the game of football.
Warren, who also contributes to the Boston community through personal appearances at local schools and hospitals, is the fifth Patriot to be selected as the Ron Burton Award winner, joining past honorees Joe Andruzzi (2003), Troy Brown (2004), Matt Light (2005) and Jarvis Green (2006).
