Analysis: Deaderick released

The Patriots make a surprising move with a former draft choice.

Brandon Deaderick appeared to be playing his best football toward the end of last season. The former seventh-round draft choice from Alabama was contributing on a regular basis in New England's defensive line rotation, and even started a half dozen games at defensive tackle.

However, that wasn't enough to stick around, apparently, as the Patriots released the young veteran Monday. Perhaps this is an indication that free agent signings Tommy Kelly and Armond Armstead are being viewed as more viable options at that position for the team in 2013.

In addition to Deaderick, practice squad wide receiver Andre Holmes was let go Monday. In their places, New England signed a pair of offensive linemen: guard Tyronne Green, a veteran of four prior NFL seasons (all with San Diego), and rookie R.J. Mattes, who played both guard and tackle at North Carolina State.
