Giants sign LB Phifer, TE Kranchick

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (Dec. 19, 2005) -- The New York Giants signed linebacker Roman Phifer and tight end Matt Kranchick.

To make room on the roster, the Giants placed tight end Sean Berton and wide receiver Jamaar Taylor on injured reserve.

Phifer, 37, has played 14 seasons in the NFL with St. Louis, the New York Jets and New England. He played on the Patriots' three Super Bowl championship teams but was not in the league this season.

Kranchick was signed off the Pittsburgh Steelers' practice squad. The Penn State product appeared in a total o six games with the Steelers the past two seasons.

Taylor was inactive for six games this season with assorted injuries and didn't catch a pass. Berton was claimed off waivers from Minnesota on Sept. 4 and saw action mostly on special teams. He tore the posterior cruciate ligament in his right knee in the Giants' 27-17 win over Kansas City last Saturday.
