According to various internet reports, the Patriots have informed 2011 sixth-round pick Markell Carter that he's been released.

Carter also seemingly hinted at his release in an overnight tweet from his @KellCarter49 Twitter account:

"It was too real Boston. I'll never forget those #BostonLights. When God closes one door he opens a new one. #STAYFOCUSED"

Carter spent his entire rookie season on the New England practice squad after his career at Central Arkansas. The Patriots reportedly paid Carter nearly a full salary last season rather than the practice squad minimum, leading some to believe that the team had high hopes for the defensive end/outside linebacker prospect.

During rookie mini-camp earlier this offseason Carter talked about adding weight and strength over the last year, growing to 275 pounds from his 2011 listed weight of 248.

But the team did add other players on the edge this offseason including top pick Chandler Jones, third-round selection Jake Bequette, versatile player Dont'a Hightower and free agent Trevor Scott. That's in addition to returning players such as Rob Ninkovich and Jermaine Cunningham.

There is also a strong chance that veteran Pro Bowler Andre Carter – currently a free agent recovering from a torn quad – could return to New England when he's healthy.

Are you surprised that Markell Carter was cut? Did you have expectations for the second-year player? Are you worried about depth on the edge of the defense? Let us know with a comment below!
