Patriots sign DL Geneo Grissom and DL Anthony Johnson to the 53-man roster; Place LB Jonathan Freeny and TE Greg Scruggs on Injured Reserve

The New England Patriots announced today that they have signed DL Geneo Grissom and DL Anthony Johnson to the 53-man roster from the practice squad. In addition, the Patriots have placed LB Jonathan Freeny and TE Greg Scrugss on the injured reserve list.

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – The New England Patriots announced today that they have signed DL Geneo Grissom and DL Anthony Johnson to the 53-man roster from the practice squad.

In addition, the Patriots have placed LB Jonathan Freeny and TE Greg Scrugss on the injured reserve list.         

Grissom, 24, was drafted by New England in the third round (97th overall) of the 2015 NFL Draft out of Oklahoma. The 6-foot-4, 265-pounder, played in 14 games as a rookie and registered five tackles, one sack and one special teams tackle. He was released by the Patriots on Sept. 3, 2016 and signed to the practice squad on Sept. 4, 2016.

Johnson, 23, originally entered the NFL as a rookie free agent with the Miami Dolphins on May 12, 2014, out of Louisiana State. The 6-foot-2, 295-pounder, made the Miami 53-man roster as a rookie and played in seven games, recording two tackles and recovering one fumble. He was released by Miami at the end of training camp in 2015 and was signed by the Washington Redskins' practice squad in November. Johnson was released by Washington on May 2, 2016. Johnson was signed by the Patriots on May 9, 2016 and played in two games in 2016 with the Patriots, accumulating five total tackles and one quarterback hit. He was released by the Patriots on Sept. 26, 2016 and signed to the practice squad on Sept. 28, 2016.
