Patriots add to draft stock

The Patriots added a pair of draft picks by virtue of the NFL compensatory selection process.

The NFL awarded the compensatory picks for April's draft last week and the Patriots came away with some extra selections – one from the league and the other by virtue of the Jamie Collins trade.

The league awarded Cleveland with a third-round pick (103rd overall) and that pick will go to New England to complete the Collins trade from October. The Patriots were set to receive a third-round compensatory selection from the Browns or a 2018 fourth-round pick in the event that Cleveland was not given one. With last week's announcement, it's now official that the Patriots will add a fourth pick among the top 103 selections.

The league also awarded the Patriots a fifth-round compensatory selection (183rd overall) after losing free agents Akiem Hicks and Tavon Wilson while signing Shea McClellin a year ago.

The added selections leave the Patriots with eight picks in the draft, which will take place April 27-29 in Philadelphia. According to the team's media relations department, the selections are as follows:

First round (32nd overall) – assigned pick

Second round (64th overall) – assigned pick

Third round (96th overall) – assigned pick

Third round (103rd overall) – trade with Cleveland

Fourth round* (137th overall) – assigned pick

Fifth round (163rd overall) – trade with Denver Broncos

Fifth round (183rd overall) – compensatory pick

Seventh round (239th overall) – trade with Detroit

*The Patriots acquired a fourth-round pick from Seattle in 2016. Since this was higher than the assigned pick New England will forfeit it as the final penalty for Deflategate. They retain their assigned pick, which is five slots later than the Seahawks.
