The Patriots first-round draft selection from Kansas State in 1997(29th overall) was signed by the Chicago Bears on July 21.The Bears acquired Canty, who started the first nine games at right cornerback last season before being replaced by Steve Israel, in hope of reinforcing their secondary.

Canty, 23, totaled 79 tackles, one interception and three sacks in two seasons with the Patriots. He finished the season playing as a defensive reserve and was credited with 53 total tackles (42 solo), which ranked 10th on the team.
