EXTRA POINTS

  • Bryce Baringer had an unconventional path to the NFL. He began his collegiate career by earning a walk-on spot at Illinois in 2018 as a true freshman, but due to being buried on the depth chart and the cost of out-of-state tuition, he transferred home to Michigan State as a regular student. Outside of a four-game stint on the Michigan State team due to injuries on the roster, Baringer did not have a walk-on spot available to him in 2019. After a year serving as the team's photographer to maintain access to the facilities to train, Baringer attended an open tryout with a new coaching staff at the Spartans and made the team, establishing himself as the Spartans top punter in 2020 and going on to have record-breaking seasons in 2021 and 2022. In 2022, he was named the Big 10 Punter of the Year and a consensus All-American by all five major associations.

  • Also earned first-team All-America honors from CBS Sports and second-team accolades from the Football Writers Association of America (FWAA).
  • His career punting average of 46.0 yards per punt (161 punts for 7,406 yards) is not only a school record, but also the best in Big Ten history (previous: Reggie Roby of Iowa with 45.5-yard average from 1979-82).
  • The 46.0-yard average is the sixth best in FBS history for punters between 150-249 career punts.
  • Led the Big Ten in punting in back-to-back seasons (48.4 in 2021; 49.0 in 2022).
  • Finished his career with 64 punts of 50-plus yards (40 percent) and 55 inside the 20 (34 percent).
  • Former walk-on rejoined the team in 2020 following a year off the active roster in 2019; earned a scholarship in 2021.
