New York Giants Postgame Transcripts 9/1

New York Giants Head Coach Ben McAdoo and select players comment on their preseason game against the New England Patriots on Thursday, September 1, 2016.

Head Coach Ben McAdoo

Opening Statement:It was good to see the back end of the roster get out there and play well tonight. They played hard, they played with some great energy and enthusiasm. They were challenged on both sides of the ball, especially on special teams, and they stepped up and had a nice night. With that, we'll open it up for questions.

How do you think your defense responded to Tom Brady?

Well, I think that they responded well. Playing chess with one of the best in the history of the game, they responded, they got a couple of turnovers and they helped us out.

What did you think of Tavarres King?

He made a nice play. He's been making plays all offseason - all training camp - and in the preseason games. He had a nice night.

Has he done enough in your mind to make the roster?

We'll have that discussion tomorrow.

What did you see from Victor Cruz?

I thought he had a couple of nice releases. I'm not sure on the production. I know on the vertical route to the right near our sideline, he had a real nice release. On one at the line of scrimmage, he didn't get the ball there, but it was encouraging to see.

How confident are you that he can be a productive receiver from what you've seen?

I`m confident.

Are you anticipating any difference in making cuts now that you're a head coach as opposed to when you were a position coach or coordinator?

We're going to use our lines of communication. We'll get with the position coaches, the coordinators and put everything on the table. We've had a revolving door, you could say, where we ranked it each day on how the positions look and we always keep it up to date. There'll be maybe a couple of surprises. We're going to have some tough conversations, it's not anything that's going to be easy. And then we'll go down and work from the top with Jerry (Reese) and the personnel department and get everybody on the same page and go from there.

When do you start that?

A while ago.

WR Odell Beckham Jr.

Since week 5 of 2014, Odell Beckham Jr. has 25 touchdown catches, the most of any player in the NFL. What are you going to do for an encore this season?

I might you just keep continuing to improve, keep continuing to get better. I'm looking forward to winning more games this year. I hate losing. I'm sure nobody likes to lose, and there are a lot of things to improve on and that's what we have the preseason for.

Brady talked to you before the game. What did he say?

I was just talking to him. Any time you get a chance to talk to somebody like that, he's made the playoffs for a very long time. Just kind of messing with him. I asked him if my jersey got lost in the mail; or what was going on with it. He was like, I got you after the game. So it's pretty cool. It's fun to be able to sit out here and watch him. Surprised he's in, but it's a fun experience.

Odell, you made a catch for the ages against the Cowboys. You've got them in the season opener. Is this ball club ready to go?

Absolutely. we still have a couple more days. Still a matter of training and timing, get everything you need to be right and ready for this game. I know we're all excited, I'm sure they are as well. It's a football thing.

Odell, I asked you last year if you had any weaknesses. You just looked and told me, just my passion for the game gets in the way sometimes. How do you control that passion but at the same time let it flourish?

You've just got to find a way. It's nothing wrong with being in touch with yourself or loving something so much that it can make you a little crazy sometimes. But you just find ways to work with it, control yourself and use that passion in a better area.

Cruz, what's it like to be back out there with him?

I'm excited man. Just great to be able to see him out there. He's looks like he's feeling good, he's ready for the season and I know we're all excited.

QB Eli Manning

Shane Vereen said, 'Just relax. It is preseason for a reason.'" Do you believe in his words?

Yeah, definitely. We are working hard, we have good practices, we want to play better in the preseason, we didn't play as well as we wanted to, but we have had a good work week this week and we will have a great work week next week and we will get ready for Dallas.

You have a lot of weapons this year with Cruz, Beckham and Shepard. How excited are you in that regard?

Definitely. We have a lot of weapons and more than those three as well, so we have a lot of guys that can make plays, run our offense well and so, for me, my job is going to be tough. We have a lot of guys that are going to want the ball and I am going to have to spread it around and try to keep everyone happy, but as long as we are moving the ball and scoring touchdowns, that will be a good thing.

I didn't get over there early enough to meet with you and Brady before the game. What did you guys talk about?

I have a lot of respect for Tom and what he has been able to accomplish on the football field. We have had a lot of pretty good games against each other over the years, so I just said hello to him and wished him good luck for the season and just checking in.

What is the pulse of the team going into the regular season?

Everybody is excited. We are excited for this year. We are excited, like you said; we know we have some quality players on this team. The defense has been playing great football, so hopefully they can continue to do that and the offense, we will pick it up and score some points.

CB Trevin Wade

How big of a game was this for you?

It was really good to show everybody that I can play in this league and on this team. That is what I tried to do today, is just go out there and play.

It seems like since Leon Hall got here, it has been tough for you to find a spot?

Yeah, I just do whatever I can. Wherever coach wants to put me, that is what I am going to do and try to make the best of it.

Where do you feel you are right now?

I don't know. That would be a question for Coach Spags or Coach McAdoo.

The way you started this game with those big plays had to help though?

Yeah, it helped. Like I said, this is my second year in this defense, so I got some experience and I know the defense now, so I can worry about other things rather than just my job. I can do my job and more.

How much did it help that here you are in the fourth preseason game and you are playing against Tom Brady?

Yeah, it was a good test. I played him before, last year, so you just have to go out and play against whoever is out there.

There are so many versatile guys in this secondary. How is the dynamic in that cornerbacks room with competition and fighting for spots?

I think it is really good. At the end of the day, you just do what you can and it is up to the coaches to put the best players out there for the team.

DE Jason Pierre-Paul

JPP back for his 7th season. What does it mean to be back with the Giants and have them treat you the way that they have?

It means a lot, this organization is very good. I love the way they handle things here and I get the chance to go out and play for the best organization in the world.

Do you think that you will be a better football player this year than you were the last 8 games of last year when you were adjusting after the fireworks accident?

I am already a better football player then I was prior to the accident.

What do you think of the additions on defense, JPP? You're trying to crack jokes with me as the guys are coming over?

Man, these are great guys, man. We've got the front four right here

Do these guys know what they are doing?

Yeah man, this is the front four right here. We are ready.

After last year's disappointment, is there unfinished business, does this team have something to prove?

Most definitely, we have some great guys. We had some additions to the front line and the chemistry is coming along great with the guys. We had a long training camp, this is the fourth preseason game and you have guys going out there and competing for jobs and they are doing a great job. I can't wait to go to battle with these guys come next Sunday.

JPP, you did a PSA for firework safety. What was your point in going forward and trying to get kids to understand the dangers of playing with fireworks?

You don't really understand until it really happens. My whole thing was to go in and let people know, 'look, it might not be a big thing right now, but if something like this happened to you, you are going to be wishing that you never lit that firework.' I wish I never lit that firework, I wish I never did that but at the end of the day I did what I did and I was going out there relaying the message to other people and it worked.

One more football question, you have Dallas coming up in 10 days, you are not going to be chasing Tony Romo, you are going to be chasing that guy (Dak) Prescott. So how do you approach this ball game?

Like how we approach any ball game. We bring that front four. We have a great defense. We are just going to go out there and try to get a win. We are going to play some great ball in the first game of the season and it is a division game, you know about that.
