Reports: Patriots interested in Dumervil

Elvis Dumervil didn't expected to be a free agent, but now that he is the Patriots are among the teams showing interest in the Pro Bowl pass rusher.

Less than a week after the Broncos swooped in to sign Wes Welker, there is a chance that the Patriots could return the favor and benefit from the debacle in Denver that led to former Pro Bowl pass rusher Elvis Dumervil hitting the free agent market.

According to various reports the Patriots have shown some interest in signing Dumervil, who was released by the Broncos after a last-minute snafu blew up a planned renegotiated contract between the two sides.

The Ravens, Titans, Steelers and Broncos have also been reported to have an interest in Dumervil's services.

The 5-11, 260-pound Dumervil started all 16 games in Denver last fall, finishing with 11 sacks and six forced fumbles. The 29-year-old veteran of seven NFL seasons has topped 8.5 sacks five times. He had a career-high 17 under Josh McDaniels' watch in 2009, but missed the entire 2010 season with a torn pectoral.

The Patriots have been linked to a number of other free agent pass rushers of late. Reports indicated that New England hosted both Dwight Freeney and John Abraham late last week in visits at Gillette Stadium. Dumervil is a younger, likely costlier option as Bill Belichick looks to add to his pass rush and bring in a veteran to work alongside second-year rising star Chandler Jones at defensive end.
