Jets rookie Revis misses second day of camp

First-round draft pick Darrelle Revis missed his second day of training camp with the Jets and remained unsigned.

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. (July 28, 2007) -- First-round draft pick Darrelle Revis missed his second day of training camp with the Jets and remained unsigned.

Revis, a cornerback taken 14th overall, became the Jets' first unsigned pick at the start of training camp since linebacker James Farrior in 1997. He has missed three practices so far: two July 27 and the single session July 28.

Negotiations between general manager Mike Tannenbaum and Revis' agent, Neil Schwartz, apparently have not progressed as quickly as first hoped.

"We're moving along and Mike has negotiated a lot of contracts and he's working to get it done as quickly as he can," coach Eric Mangini said.

A message left for Schwartz by The Associated Press wasn't immediately returned.

The snag is reportedly in the length of the contract, and Revis and Schwartz might be using the deals signed by the two players drafted around the former University of Pittsburgh star as a reference. Steelers linebacker Lawrence Timmons, the 15th pick in April, signed a four-year deal that guarantees him $8,053,000 in bonus money and could be worth as much as $15 million. St. Louis defensive end Adam Carriker, taken a pick before Revis, signed a five-year deal.

Once he signs, the Jets expect Revis to compete for the starting job at right cornerback, a position Justin Miller, David Barrett, Hank Poteat and Drew Coleman all took turns at last season. He could also serve as the team's punt returner.

Revis was considered the best overall cornerback in the draft, and had an outstanding college career, finishing with 129 tackles and eight interceptions.

Left guard Pete Kendall was back at practice, the bitter contract dispute between him and the team still unresolved.

Kendall, whose agent is also Schwartz, has made repeated requests to be traded or released. He wants a $1 million raise on his $1.7 million salary, but the Jets haven't budged. So, the 34-year-old Kendall has shown up for the team's first three practices, not wanting to lose the $14,000 in fines for being absent.

When asked if anything had changed with Kendall's situation, Mangini said simply: "No. Status quo."

As in practices on July 27, Kendall worked mainly with the second-team offense with a few reps with the first team.

Other than Revis, the only other player to miss practice was running back Leon Washington, who was excused for personal reasons. Washington was seen vomiting during the morning practice July 27 and didn't participate in the late session.

Mangini said Washington's absence was separate from the sickness, but would not disclose details.
