2026 Free Agent Forecast: Cornerback

The new NFL league year begins Wednesday, March 11, and with it, the advent of 2026’s free agency marketplace. Here is a look at the landscape from a Patriots perspective. Today, we analyze the cornerbacks.

PATRIOTS FREE AGENTS: Alex Austin (RFA), Miles Battle (ERFA)

NOTABLE EXTERNAL FREE AGENTS: Jamel Dean TB, Riq Woolen SEA, Jaylen Watson KC, James Pierre PIT, Montaric Brown JAX, Josh Jobe SEA, Rock Ya-Sin DET.

POSITION ANALYSIS: While there isn't a major internal free agent at cornerback, Christian Gonzalez's fifth-year option and potential for a lucrative extension are the main storylines at the position this offseason.

Gonzalez started slow in 2025 after a hamstring injury suffered in the early days of training camp cost him the first three games of the year. But once he returned, the Patriots lost just two games the rest of the year, and Gonzalez came on in the playoffs with some of the best performances of his career. His game-sealing interception against the Broncos in the AFC Championship and key passes defensed in the Super Bowl were highlight moments that put him firmly in line to be paid among the league's top cornerbacks.

Carlton Davis III and Marcus Jones are also under contract for 2025. Davis saw his fair share of targets as quarterbacks avoided Gonzalez, but held up well and picked up two interceptions against the Texans in the playoffs after not picking off any during the regular season. Both were dynamic efforts that showed the physical cornerback can make plays when it counts the most.

Jones was voted a captain for the first time in his career and responded with his best all-around season, earning second-team All-Pro status as a punt returner and a three-year contract extension from the team. He established career highs in interceptions (three), passes defensed (11), sacks (two), and tackles-for-loss (eight). But it was Jones's play in the slot that was most exciting, as he took on Vrabel's physical style and grew into a strategic weapon on defense.

Behind the starting trio, Charles Woods, Miles Battle, and Kobee Minor provide depth.

Davis is the veteran of the group and is still just 29, but as a physical cornerback, faces his share of nicks and bruises. Woods (117 defensive snaps in 12 games) did a good job filling in at various points during the season and provides solid insurance.

Cornerback isn't a huge free agency priority, but the long-term need at the position alongside Gonzalez and Jones should always be under consideration in the later rounds of the draft.
