FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – The New England Patriots are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Bobby Grier, who served the organization with distinction for nearly two decades in coaching and executive roles. Grier passed away peacefully at the age of 82 over the weekend.

After three seasons as the running backs coach at Boston College (1978-80), Grier joined the Patriots in 1981 as the team's offensive backfield coach and went on to serve in a variety of roles, including as a scout (1982-85), coach (1981, 1985-92), director of pro scouting (1993-94), director of player personnel (1995-96) and ultimately as vice president of player personnel from 1997 to 2000. His leadership and vision helped shape the foundation of the Patriots modern era, and his contributions to the game extended far beyond the field.

"Bobby Grier was a man of tremendous integrity," said Patriots Chairman and CEO Robert Kraft. "He broke barriers and built bridges, and his legacy will forever be part of our franchise's history. We are grateful for his years of service and the impact he had on so many people within our organization and across the NFL. My thoughts are with his family and all who are mourning his loss."

Grier left the Patriots in 2000 to join the Houston Texans, where he worked for the next 16 years. Since 2017, he worked as a consultant for the Miami Dolphins. Grier's influence extended through generations, including his sons, Chris Grier, who currently serves as general manager of the Miami Dolphins, and Mike Grier, the general manager of the San Jose Sharks.

The Patriots organization extends its heartfelt condolences to the Grier family, including his children and grandchildren, and to all those who had the privilege of knowing and working with him. His legacy as a pioneer, leader, and gentleman will be remembered with great respect and admiration.

Service arrangements have not yet been disclosed.
