Panthers sign ex-Giants SS Williams

The Carolina Panthers signed free-agent safety Shaun Williams, three days after Marlon McCree left the team to sign with San Diego.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (March 14, 2006) -- The Carolina Panthers signed free-agent safety Shaun Williams, three days after Marlon McCree left the team to sign with San Diego.

Williams, who played under Panthers coach John Fox when Fox was the New York Giants' defensive coordinator, missed eight games and the postseason last season because of a hamstring injury.

Williams was the 24th overall pick in 1998 and began his career at free safety before switching to strong safety after two seasons. He started 58 consecutive games for the Giants from 2000-03 and was second on the team with a career-high 108 tackles in 2002.
