Patriots Postgame Quotes - 9/01/2011

New England Patriots players comment on their Preseason game against the New York Giants from Gillette Stadium on Thursday, September 1, 2011.

Matthew Slater, Wide Receiver
(On his 64-yard reception in the first quarter)
"It was a crossing route and it was a route that's kind of one of our base routes we've been running since day one. I was just trying to do what I could to get open and Tom [Brady] saw me late, he put it on me and I just tried to make a play. But like I said, I just feel real fortunate to have been able to have been out there tonight and hopefully show a little bit of what I can do and thank God for the opportunity."

(On doing as many things as he can to make the team)
"There are a lot of good players in that room on the team right now. Everybody can play or they wouldn't be here. I guess this time of year is real tough for everybody. You just try to go out there and do what you can and make plays and show the coaches that you can help the team win games and hopefully I did enough of that this preseason to be around here this time next week. But like I said, I'm thankful for the opportunity I've had to be here these past few years and hopefully I can continue to do it."

(On his relationship with Brandon Tate as they compete for a spot on the team)
"Brandon is a great guy, he's a friend of mine, he's a great teammate. I have a lot of respect for him and I feel like he has a lot of respect for me and all those guys in that room. We're all competing for the same jobs, but at the same time, we have mutual respect for one another, we're friends. Outside of football, life going on, we have quality friendships that will endure."

Albert Haynesworth, Defensive Lineman
(On whether him being substituted in and out is about conditioning)
"It's not conditioning. And what we do here - which is pretty good, I mean unbelievable, it will help you – is that we rotate a lot. We have a lot of depth. We had good depth at Tennessee, but here, we have great depth. We have guys that go to any other team and start. Like coach tells, like Pep [Pepper Johnson], he tells us, 'Go as hard as you can for however many plays. If that's three, four plays, do that, come out and we'll have someone else send another wave of attack in.' That's what we're going to do, I'm going to play as hard as I possibly can. When I get gassed, I'm going to come out."

(On if he and Andre Carter talk to each other about playing for the Patriots)
"Yeah, we were talking, just about how different it is and how we really like this place. To me, it's a career-saving place for me to come. I had no idea it would be like this, but it's unbelievable and I wish I kind of took two years ago and came here."

Shaun Ellis, Defensive End
(On how he feels after his first preseason game)
"I feel good, I feel good. They did a great job of getting me in shape and doing the things they need to do to get me ready. It's a tremendous organization, everybody here has treated me with the utmost respect, so I feel good about going into Monday night."

(On if it was important to play a few snaps before the regular season)
"Yeah, it was, just because I had to work on my timing live. It's just one of those things…you have to get out there and get the flow of the game and just get used to playing in a Patriots uniform, to see how they operate, go about things on game day. It was fun. I learned a lot too, being on the sidelines, just how they go through coaching changes and all that stuff."

Patrick Chung, Safety
(On how it made a difference having a good pass rush tonight.)
"It definitely makes a difference having a pass rush because it makes the quarterback make quick decisions. When he is under pressure it makes it harder for him to make the right decision."

Brandon Meriweather, Safety
(On how he felt the defense performed over the course of the pre-season)
"I think we still have a lot of work to do, we made some improvements in areas we wanted to but overall we still have a lot of work to do."

(On how he feels now that the NFL season will start next week)
"I'm excited now, I am really excited. Everything counts now and now we can get down to football and play with the guys you know will be playing with you all the time."

Josh Barrett, Safety
(On how he feels about his position on the team)
"That's completely up to the coaches. All you can do is go out there and play. That's my approach to it."

(On if he felt he played more than he thought he would)
"You always want to be out on the field as much as possible and be prepared to be out on the field as much as possible. With that mindset, anything less would be a letdown. You want to be out there as much as possible, so I wasn't necessarily caught off guard."

Brandon Tate, Wide Receiver
(On what he works on in the final pre-season game)
"Since this is the last pre-season game, I try to prepare myself mentally and get my reps in while I am out there. I try to take every advantage I can while I am out there and work on what I need to do to be ready for the season."

(On the competition at wide receiver)
"Competition is always going to be high, especially with the guys the team brought in. All I can do is keep playing hard and keep doing what the team needs me to do."

James Ihedigbo, Safety
(On the difficulty of joining the team late and getting up to speed)
"You just have to continue to be sharp on things. You have to spend extra time with coaches and [watching] film and that good stuff in terms of learning the terminology and making sure that you're mentally prepared to go out there and play your best."

(On the difficulty of playing with your job on his mind)
"Well yeah, I mean, you just got to play. At the end of the day, it's out of my pay grade, so you just got to do your best to put your best foot forward and be successful."

Antwaun Molden, Cornerback
(On how it felt to be claimed off waivers last night and playing tonight.)
"Yeah it was non-stop for me, I got in about 1:30 am and was handed a playbook and I had to just get in and go. The coach just said to be ready for all aspects of the game, defense, special teams and I was told to just be ready. "

Shane Vereen, Running Back
(On the difficulty of not playing the previous games due to injury)
"Real frustrating. Real frustrating. The main thing I want to do is be there for my team and help them out in any way possible. I wasn't able to do that [before], but I was able to get out there tonight a little bit."
