The Patriots are adding another playmaker to QB Drake Maye's supporting cast, signing former Packers wide receiver Romeo Doubs to a free-agent contract, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.
Last season, Doubs posted a career-best 724 receiving yards on 55 catches to go along with six touchdowns. Although the majority of his targets came at the first two levels of the defense, the 25-year-old can also stretch the field, hauling in seven deep catches in 2025. As primarily an outside receiver, Doubs has some speed to win vertically, but it's his ability to create separation at the top of routes as a refined route-runner and produce on intermediate targets that make him an intriguing fit in the Patriots offense as a younger receiver whose arrow is pointing upward.
On his 55 catches, Doubs converted 41 first downs with a 43.3% contested catch rate (13-of-30). He primarily runs go routes, hitches, outs, and in-breaking routes with nearly 80 percent of his targets coming at the first two levels. Doubs mostly aligned out wide (82%). He has some wiggle after the catch and is a solid red-zone option with 21 career touchdowns in his first four seasons. Doubs also flashed the ability to find soft spots in zones working over the middle of the field, especially on Green Bay's bootleg concepts, where he'll run crossing routes into the quarterback's vision.
According to NFL Network's Tom Pelissero, the Patriots plan to release star WR Stefon Diggs at the official start to the league year on Wednesday. Diggs played a high-volume role for New England, leading the team in targets (102), receptions (85), and receiving yards (1,013) last season. Doubs is a different kind of player than Diggs, as more of an outside receiver, but his stats in Green Bay suggest he could replace some of the production left behind by Diggs. From this perspective, Doubs is a solid addition. However, the hope here would be to pair Doubs with another high-end receiver.
The Patriots have reportedly added Doubs on a multi-year contract, giving him and Maye the runway to grow together over the next several seasons in New England.
