FOXBOROUGH, Mass (Nov. 20, 2005) -- Steve Belichick, the father of New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick, died Saturday night of heart failure. He was 86.

The elder Belichick, an Ohio native, played fullback with the Detroit Lions and was an assistant football coach at the U.S. Naval Academy for 33 years. He played football at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland and coached at Hiram College in northeast Ohio.

Team spokeswoman Michelle Murphy had no further details about Steve Belichick's death, but said the team would issue a statement later Sunday.
