Bears hire Wilks as defensive backs coach

Steven Wilks joined the Chicago Bears as defensive backs coach after spending the last two years working for Tyrone Willingham at Notre Dame and Washington.

LAKE FOREST, Ill. (Feb. 16, 2006) -- Steven Wilks joined the Chicago Bears as defensive backs coach after spending the last two years working for Tyrone Willingham at Notre Dame and Washington.

The job initially opened late last month when Perry Fewell became the Buffalo Bills' defensive coordinator after spending one season with the Bears. Michigan defensive backs coach Ron English backed out after accepting an offer from Chicago last week.

Wilks was one of three assistants to follow Willingham from Notre Dame to Washington. An 11-year college coaching veteran, Wilks previously coached at Bowling Green, East Tennessee State, his alma mater Appalachian State, Illinois State, Savannah State and Johnson C. Smith College.
